"Encouraging men to walk in faith"
In Hebrews 11, the words “by faith” are not actually what the Greek says. In Greek, Hebrews 11 only uses the word “pistei” with no prefix or word before it. However, the Hebrew is b’emunah which means “in faith.” The word “in” is more personal and intimate than the word “by” which can sometimes give the impression that it wasn’t these strong men who were faithful but that “faith” was actually doing the work and not the man. On the contrary, these men walked IN faith.
The Hebrew word for faith is אֱמוּנָה emunah (H530) is concretely represented as a pillar and means to have a firm and complete trust and confidence in someone or something. אֱמוּנָה emunah is the feminine noun form of אֵמוּן emun which shares the same root as the word אָמֵן amen and means “to be firm” in the sense of something that grabs hold or supports something else. אֱמוּנָה emunah is equivalent to the Greek word πίστις pístis (G4102) and means “conviction” which is a firmly held belief or opinion.
