נַפְשֹׁ nephesh (H5315) means “being” and is the whole of a person or animal; the unity of the body, organs, and breath. This is demonstrated in Numbers 11:6; Proverbs 16:26; Proverbs 23:2; Ecclesiastes 6:7, and Hosea 9:4 where the word commonly translated “appetite” is נַפְשֹׁ nephesh.
