סֻּכּוֹת sukkot (H5521) is the feminine plural of סֻּכָּה sukkah, a temporary shelter; a small enclosure; dwelling place. Sukkah is from the root סֻּך suk (H5520) which means “protective covering” as a hedge or thicket of thorns or bushes for protection from the elements or predators (cf. Psalm 10:9; Psalm 27:5; Psalm 76:2; Jeremiah 25:38). “The watcher over the crops, flock or herd, would construct a covering (booth) as a shelter from the sun, wind or rain. These coverings were often constructed on an elevated position, and from materials readily available such as bushes, thorns and small trees.” – Jeff Benner, Ancient Hebrew Research Center
