Often translated as confess, praise, thank, or thanksgiving, יָדָה yada (H3034) literally means to “throw the hand” in confession or praise (cf. Genesis 29:35; Genesis 49:8) or stretch out the hand to grab (cf. Isaiah 11:8). יָדָה yada comes from the root word יָד (H3027) which means “hand” (cf. Genesis 3:22; Psalms 28:2; Psalms 134:2). When יָדָה yada is written in the hiphil [active causative] form it means “thanks or praise” (cf. Genesis 29:35; Psalm 18:49). When יָדָה yada is written in the hitpa’el [reflexive] form it means “confession” (cf. Job 40:14; Psalm 32:5; Proverbs 28:13).
