אֵלקַנָּא Elqana (H410 + H7067) means “Zealous El (God)” or “mighty one of zealousness.” This name is usually translated as the phrase “am a jealous/zealous God” where “jealous” is defined as “fiercely protective or vigilant of one’s rights or possessions” and not a feeling of envy since zeal is “eagerness and ardent interest in pursuit of something.” Thus, jealous/zealous can be used interchangeably if the correct definitions are used.

קַנָּא qana (H7067) refers to a single-minded person insistent on reaching the desired outcome; one who is protective over someone or something. קַנָּא qana is equivalent to the Greek word ζῆλος zēlos (G2205) which means excitement of mind, ardour, fervour of spirit; ardour in embracing, pursuing, or defending anything.

A root of קַנָּא qana is קַן qan (H7064) and means “nest”—”The parent bird will guard over and protect the nest and eggs from predators. Man can guard over the family, wife, and possessions in a positive way (protect from an enemy) or a negative way (by not trusting or a desire to have another’s possessions).” – Jeff Benner
