חֹרֵב chorev (H2722) literally means “to be waste” as in a dry wasteland or a place that has been laid waste and made desolate. Horeb is located in the back of the wilderness in the land of Midian and is also another name for Mount Sinai. Horeb is called הַר הָאֱלֹהִים Har haElohim “The Mountain of Elohim” in Exodus 3:1; “Now Moses was keeping the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the back of the wilderness, and came to Elohim’s mountain, to Horeb.”
