Summary
Context and coherence (Nehemiah 8:8)
- Moses was not allowed to enter into the promised land.
- Deut. 3:23-25: I earnestly begged YHWH’s favor at that time, saying, “Lord YHWH, you have begun to show your servant your greatness, and your strong hand [and your outstretched arm]. (LXX) For what el (god) is there in the heavens or in land that can do works like yours, and mighty acts like yours? Please let me go over and see the good land that is beyond the Jordan, that fine mountain, and Lebanon.”
- Deut. 3:26: YHWH said to me, “That is enough! Speak no more to me of this word…for you will not go over this Jordan.
- In a final attempt Moses sought the Lord to reconsider His judgment to enter into the promised land. What’s interesting is Moses asked if he could see the good land, not enter. The strong rebuke could suggest YHWH saw through the veiled request yet through loving kindness allowed him to observe from a distance-at Mt. Pisgah.
- Mount Pisgah
- The location where Balak and Balaam attempted to curse Israel.
- The location where Moses was no-more; also known as Mt. Nebo
- Deut. 34:1, 5-6: Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is opposite Jericho. YHWH showed him all the land…So Moses the servant of YHWH died there in the land of Moab, according to YHWH’s word. 6 [They](DSS)(LXX) buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth Peor, but no man knows where his tomb is to this day. (cf. Jude 1:9).
- What prevented Moses from entering?
- Num. 20:10-12: Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels! Shall we bring water out of this rock for you?” 11 Moses lifted up his hand, and struck the rock with his staff twice, and water came out abundantly. The congregation and their livestock drank. 12 YHWH said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you didn’t believe in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the sons of Israel, therefore you will not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.”
- Disbelief in Him. We tend to view not trusting in the Most High in broad terms relating to the afterlife. That mindset sees disbelief as a character of a non-believer. What happened with Moses shows belief is an on-going heart condition that is not sealed at the moment we repent. It is a moment-by-moment exercise of total faith in His will.
- Isa. 8:13: “YHWH of hosts, Him you shall set apart. Let Him be your fear and let Him be your dread.
- Sanctify Me before the eyes of the sons of Israel. In general, most people learn visually. An educator utilizes visual aids to convey concepts and ideas. Vocational type courses have long lasting effects on students retaining information by hands-on application. In addition, leadership holds strong influence over the governed. The impact of Moses actions caused a ripple effect in that it not only demonstrated his personal distrust in YHWH’s instruction, but also influenced disbelief within the assembly. Obedience has a two-way function. To condition our hearts and those within are circle of influence.

Exhortation
Counsel, comfort, and encouragement (Acts 13:14-15)
- The consequences of our ways being out of sync with YHWH’s ways. As dearly beloved as Moses was by the Most High, even he was penalized for not upholding the instructions of YHWH.
- Jer. 32:19: great in counsel…whose eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of men, to give everyone according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
- Ways:
- H1870, derek; From H1869; a road (as trodden); figuratively a course of life or mode of action, often adverbially:
- (hodos) ‘road’ (G3598); road, path, a general term for a thoroughfare to get from one place to another.
- Doings:
- H4611, mah-al-awl’; From H5953; a deed, practice, invention, work.
- The understanding is through the course of our walk-in faith we are to be doing the activity of training regularly to improve our obedience.
- Ways:
- Jer. 32:19: great in counsel…whose eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of men, to give everyone according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
- Yeshua describes salvation as a construct of our ways [course of life] aligning with the Father’s ways [course of life] in the apostolic reading this week.
- Inspired by Psalms. 115:1-9, you become what you worship. YHWH wants us to keep His ways, so we become like Him-made in His image-again. And that is achieved by conformance to the image of the Son (Rom. 8:28-29); Who is the exact representation of El Elyon (Col. 1:15; Heb. 1:3).
- Adam desired his own image; to know good vs evil. The serpent verifies this is a principal truth he twisted. They were already like Elohim and made in His image. For, they acted like Him. The moment they are, took up on, the eating of the fruit they didn’t act like Him. To transgress the commandment of YHWH is acting like the serpent. Who pursues to be Elohim without worshipping El Elyon. In fact, in-order to be perceived as being Elohim means you need followers. Satan always seeks followers rather benei Elohim or benei Adam. Three times after verse eight a plea is made to trust in Adonai opposed to trusting in little Elohim.
- Psa. 115:1-9: 1 Not to us, O YHWH, not to us, But to Your Name give esteem, For Your loving-commitment, For Your truth. 2 Why should the nations say, “Where now is their Elohim?” 3 But our Elohim is in the heavens; Whatever pleased Him, He has done. 4 Their idols are silver and gold, The work of men’s hands. 5 They have mouths, but they do not speak; They have eyes, but they do not see; 6 They have ears, but they do not hear; They have noses, but they do not smell; 7 They have hands, but they do not handle; They have feet, but they do not walk; They make no sound through their throat. 8 The ones who make them, shall become like them – All who trust in them. 9 O Yisra’ĕl, trust in YHWH; He is their help and their shield.
