Torah Summary
Context and coherence (Nehemiah 8:8)
2:1 The heavens, the land, and all their vast array were finished. 2 On the [sixth](LXX)(SP)(Syr) day Elohim finished his [works](LXX)(Syr) which he had done; and he rested on the seventh day from all his [works](LXX)(Syr) which he had done. 3 Elohim blessed the seventh day, and made it holy, because he rested in it from all his [works](LXX)(Syr) of creation which [Elohim](LXX) had done. 4 These are the births of the heavens and of the land when they were created, in the day that [Elohim](LXX) made the land and the heavens. 5 No shrub of the field was yet in the land, and no plant of the field had yet sprung up; for [Elohim](LXX) had not caused it to rain on the land. There was not a man to till the ground, 6 but a [spring](LXX) went up from the land, and watered the whole surface of the ground. 7 [Elohim](LXX) formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. 8 [Elohim](LXX) planted a garden eastward, in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 Out of the ground [Elohim](LXX) made every tree to grow that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food, including the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10 A river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it was parted, and became the source of four rivers. 11 The name of the first is Pishon: it flows through the whole land of [Havilah],(mss) where there is gold; 12 and the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and onyx stone are also there. 13 The name of the second river is Gihon. It is the same river that flows through the whole land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is Hiddekel. This is the one which flows in front of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates. 15 [Elohim](LXX) took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to work and guard it. 16 [Elohim](LXX) commanded the man, saying, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; 17 but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, die, you die.” 18 [Elohim](LXX) said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper [as his opposite].”(MTT) 19 Out of the ground [Elohim](LXX) formed [every livestock, and](mss) every [wild](LXX) beast of the field, and every bird of the heavens, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called every living soul became its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock, and to [all](LXX) the birds of the heavens, and to every beast of the field; but for man there was not found a helper [as his opposite].(MTT) 21 [Elohim](LXX) caused a [trance](LXX) to fall upon the man and he slept, and he took one(אַחַת achat) [unit](MTT) from his side, and closed up the flesh [under her].(MTT) 22 [Elohim](LXX) made a woman from the side which he had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She will be called ‘woman,' because she was taken out of man.” 24 Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will cling with his wife, and [the two](LXX)(mss) will be one flesh. 25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.Bereshiyt (Genesis) 2:1-25
- The Summary and the Ended Word of Creation
- Genesis 2:1-3 The heavens, the land, and all their vast array were finished. 2 On the [sixth](LXX)(SP)(Syr) day Elohim finished his [works](LXX)(Syr) which he had done; and he rested on the seventh day from all his [works](LXX)(Syr) which he had done. 3 God blessed the seventh day, and made it holy, because he rested in it from all his [works](LXX)(Syr) of creation which [Elohim](LXX) had done.
- The Births of the Heavens and the Land
- The Hebrew name of the book is בְּרֵאשִׁית bereshiyt (H7225) and named so, like all books of the Torah, from the opening statement of the book in 1:1, “In the beginning…“
- The English name of the book is Genesis and is a transliteration of the Greek word γένεσις genesis from Genesis 2:4. γένεσις genesis is defined as the source or origin of something as in a book of one’s lineage; or used of birth or nativity in the sense of that which follows origin, namely, existence or life. Genesis is from the root word γένος genos (G1085) which a unit of heredity which is transferred from a parent to seed (i.e. gene) from the rood γίνομαι ginomai which means to become.
- γένεσις genesis is equivalent to the Hebrew word תּוֹלְדוֹת toldot (H8435), used in Genesis 2:4, and means “generations” from the root word יָלַד yalad or לַד lad which means “to bear or bring forth a child” (see Colossians 1:15-18 and Hebrews 1:5-6).
- Here we can see that all was created for the Son.
- Colossians 1:15-18 He is the image of the invisible Elohim, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created in the heavens and on the land, visible things and invisible things, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things are held together. 18 He is the head of the body, the assembly, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he might have the preeminence.
- Hebrews 1:5-6 For to which of the angels did he say at any time, “You are my Son. Today I have become your father?” (cf. Psalm 2:7) and again, “I will be to him a Father, and he will be to me a Son?” (cf. 2 Samuel 7:14; 1 Chronicles 17:13) 6 When he again brings in the firstborn into the world he says, “Let all the angels of Elohim worship him.” (cf. Deuteronomy 32:43)
- “These are the births…” It’s important to note that the following births, generations, or listed origins are not in chronological order. They seem to be placed in an order of importance or an order that can tell a story.
- Genesis 2:4-14 These are the births (תּוֹלְדוֹת toldot) of the heavens and of the land when they were created, in the day that [Elohim](LXX) made the land and the heavens.
- The Spring in Genesis 2:5-14 No shrub of the field was yet in the land, and no plant of the field had yet sprung up; for [Elohim](LXX) had not caused it to rain on the land. There was not a man to till the ground, 6 but a [spring](LXX) went up from the land, and watered the whole surface of the ground.
- The Breath of Life in Genesis 2:7 [Elohim](LXX) formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
- The Garden of Eden in Genesis 2:8 [Elohim](LXX) planted a garden eastward, in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed.
- Man Protecting the Garden and Torah in Genesis 2:15-17 [Elohim](LXX) took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to work and guard it. 16 [Elohim](LXX) commanded the man, saying, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; 17 but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”
- The Covenant of Man and Woman in Genesis 2:18-25
- Genesis 2:18 [Elohim](LXX) said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper [as his opposite].”(MTT)
- Genesis 2:19-20 Out of the ground [Elohim](LXX) formed [every livestock, and](mss) every [wild](LXX) beast of the field, and every bird of the heavens, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called every living soul became its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock, and to [all](LXX) the birds of the heavens, and to every beast of the field; but for man there was not found a helper [as his opposite].(MTT)
- Genesis 2:21 [Elohim](LXX) caused a [trance](LXX) to fall upon the man and he slept, and he took one(אַחַת achat) [unit](MTT) from his side, and closed up the flesh [under her].(MTT)
- Genesis 2:22 [Elohim](LXX) made a woman from the side which he had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.
- Genesis 2:23-24 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken out of man.” 24 Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will cling with his woman, and [the two](LXX)(mss) will be one flesh.
- Genesis 2:25 The man and his woman were both naked, and they were not ashamed.
- The Covenant of Man and Woman = Yeshua and the Assembly
- Ephesians 5:25-32 Husbands, love your wives, even as Messiah also loved the assembly and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that he might present the assembly to himself gloriously, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without defect. 28 Even so husbands also ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself. 29 For no man ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, even as the Lord also does the assembly, 30 because we are members of his body, of his flesh and bones. 31 “For this cause a man will leave his father and mother and will be joined to his wife. Then the two will become one flesh.” (cf. Genesis 2:24) 32 This mystery is great, but I speak concerning Messiah and the assembly. 33 Nevertheless each of you must also love his own wife even as himself; and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
- The covenant relationship between the man and the woman being listed as the final section of the births of creation may suggest that the great mystery of Yeshua and his bride, the Assembly, close out the end of the age and
- Genesis 2:4-14 These are the births (תּוֹלְדוֹת toldot) of the heavens and of the land when they were created, in the day that [Elohim](LXX) made the land and the heavens.
- Day Six
- Genesis: 1) The אֶרֶץ erets “land” produces living creatures, livestock, creeping, and animals of the land 2) It was good 3) Elohim said, “Let’s make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the livestock, [and over all the wild animals of the land],(syr) and over every creeping that creeps on the land.” Thus, man was made in the image of Elohim, male and female He created them 4) Elohim blessed them, [saying],(LXX) “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the land, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the heavens, and over the livestock, [and over all the wild animals of the land],(syr) [and over all the creatures that crawl](LXX) on the land.” 5) Elohim said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed, which is on the face of all the land, and every tree, which bears fruit yielding seed. It will be your food. To every wild animal of the land, [and to every livestock of the land],(mss) and to every bird of the heavens, and to every creature that creeps on the land, in which there is life, I have given every green plant for food.” 5) Elohim saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good
- Jubilees: 2:13 And on the sixth day He created all the animals of the land, and all cattle, and everything that moves on the land. 14. And after all this He created man, a man and a woman created He them, and gave him dominion over all that is upon the land, and in the seas, and over everything that flies, and over beasts and over cattle, and over everything that moves on the land, and over the whole earth, and over all this He gave him dominion. And these four kinds He created on the sixth day. 15. And there were altogether two and twenty kinds. 16. And He finished all His work on the sixth day–all that is in the heavens and on the land, and in the seas and in the abysses, and in the light and in the darkness, and in everything.
- 2 Esdras 6:53 “But on the sixth day, you commanded the land to produce before you cattle, animals, and creeping things. 54 Over these, you ordained Adam as ruler over all the works that you have made. Of him came all of us, the people whom you have chosen. 55 “All this have I spoken before you, O Lord, because you have said that for our sakes you made this world. 56 As for the other nations, which also come from Adam, you have said that they are nothing, and are like spittle. You have likened the abundance of them to a drop that falls from a bucket. 57 Now, O Lord, behold these nations, which are reputed as nothing, being rulers over us and devouring us. 58 But we your people, whom you have called your firstborn, your only children, and your fervent lover, are given into their hands. 59 Now if the world is made for our sakes, why don’t we possess our world for an inheritance? How long will this endure?”
- Josephus On the sixth day he created the four-footed beasts, and made them male and female: on the same day he also formed man. Accordingly Moses says, That in just six days the world, and all that is therein, was made. And that the seventh day was a rest, and a release from the labor of such operations; whence it is that we Celebrate a rest from our labors on that day, and call it the Sabbath, which word denotes rest in the Hebrew tongue.
Apostolic Summary
Context and coherence (Nehemiah 8:8)
- 1 Corinthians 15 – Resurrection – a foundation of our faith:
- How is Christ’s resurrection a foundation of our faith (vs. 1-19)?
- “But if there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain. Moreover, we are even found to be false witnesses of God, because we witnessed against God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless (#3152 – mataios — “vain, futile, worthless, empty”); you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied” (1 Cor. 15:1-19).
- Without Christ’s resurrection…
- “Our faith is vain [imaginary, unfounded, devoid of value and benefit—not based on truth]” (vs. 14 AMP) and “worthless and powerless [mere delusion]” (vs. 17).
- “We are covenant-breakers, bearing false witness on behalf of God, and transgressing the ninth commandment” (vs. 15).
- “We are still in our sins [and under the control and penalty of sin]” (vs. 17).
- “Those who have fallen asleep in Messiah have perished and are lost (vs. 18).
- “We are the most pitiful (pitiable) and miserable of all people” (vs. 19).
- Why are these things true if the resurrection is false?
Apostolic Exhortation
Counsel, comfort, and encouragement (Acts 13:14-15)
- Yeshua’s resurrection proves the following:
- The resurrection confirms Messianic prophecy in the Tanakh and of the second, final and greatest prophet, Yeshua of Nazareth:
- “I have set the Lord continually before me; because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore, my heart is glad and my glory rejoices; my body too will dwell in safety, for You will not abandon me to Sheol, nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay” (Psa. 16:8-10).
- “Therefore, I will divide and give Him a portion with the great [kings and rulers], and He shall divide the spoils with the mighty, because He [willingly] poured out His life to death, and was counted among the transgressors; yet He Himself bore and took away the sin of many, and interceded [with the Father] for the transgressors” (Isa. 53:12).
- “[F]or just as Jonah was in the stomach of the sea monster for three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights” (Mat. 12:40).
- “For they did not yet understand the Scripture, that He must rise from the dead” (Joh. 20:9).
- Because Yeshua was resurrected, it confirms His Messiahship:
- “You men of Israel, hear these words. Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved by God to you by mighty works and wonders and signs which God did by him in the midst of you, even as you yourselves know, him, being delivered up by the determined counsel and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by the hand of lawless men, crucified and killed; whom God raised up, having freed him from the agony of death, because it was not possible that he should be held by it. For David says concerning him, ‘I saw the Lord always before my face, For he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved. Therefore, my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced. Moreover, my flesh also will dwell in hope; because you will not leave my soul in Sheol, neither will you allow your Holy One to see decay. You made known to me the ways of life. You will make me full of gladness with your presence.’” (Act 2:22-28; ref. Psa. 16:8-10).
- Yeshua’s resurrection is evidence that we are now justified by the Father.
- Week 145 on the Elect:
- Yeshua is the First-Fruits and is therefore representative of the entire lump.
- “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When you enter the land which I am going to give to you and reap its harvest, then you shall bring in the sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest to the priest. He shall wave the sheaf before the Lord for you to be accepted; on the day after the sabbath the priest shall wave it” (Lev. 23:10-12).
- “But the fact is, Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep” (1 Cor. 15:20).
- “Now not for his sake only was it written that it was credited to him, but for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, as those who believe in Him who raised Yeshua our Lord from the dead, He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification” (Rom. 4:23-25).
- “We sinned, therefore He suffered; we were justified, therefore He rose.”
- “But the Lord desired to crush Him, causing Him grief; if He renders Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His seed, He will prolong His days” (Isa. 53:10).
- The resurrection confirms Messianic prophecy in the Tanakh and of the second, final and greatest prophet, Yeshua of Nazareth:
KEY POINT:
Yeshua’s resurrection was proof that His atonement for our sin was accepted by the Father (see Isa. 53). What he had done, in order that sinners might be saved, was approved. Our justification, therefore, became sure, as it was for this that he had given himself up to death.
- Yeshua’s resurrection was/is proof that we are no longer dead in our sins.
- Freedom from sin (and forgiveness for it) was achieved by our death and burial with Messiah Yeshua. This is Good News indeed!
- “Knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin. For the one who has died is freed from sin ” (Rom. 6:6,7).
- “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires” (Gal. 5:24).
- “Therefore, since Messiah has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin” (1 Pet. 4:1).
- However, even if death separates us from sin, we still have no hope unless we can live again after this death. This is why resurrection is so important!
- “If Messiah has not been raised, your faith is vain; you are still in your sins” (1 Cor. 15:17).
- “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me” (Ga. 2:20).
- “For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved in His life. So then, as through one offense the result was condemnation to all mankind, so also through one act of righteousness the result was justification into life to all mankind” (Rom. 5:10,18-19).
- “For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection” (Rom. 6:5).
- “For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive” (1 Cor. 15:22).
- Freedom from sin (and forgiveness for it) was achieved by our death and burial with Messiah Yeshua. This is Good News indeed!
- Yeshua’s Resurrection confirms the Kingdom of God had been established from this age until the end of the ages:
- “Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. And so, because he was a prophet and knew that GOD HA.D. SWORN TO HIM WITH AN OATH TO SEAT one OF HIS DESCENDANTS ON HIS THRONE, he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that HE WAS NEITHER ABANDONED TO HA.D.ES, NOR DID His flesh SUFFER DECAY. This Jesus Elohim raised up again, to which we are all witnesses. Therefore, having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear. For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says: ‘THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, “SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET.’ Therefore, let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Messiah -this Yeshua whom you crucified” (Acts 2:29-36).
- Strong’s G2962. kurios – Lord, master, owner. Word Origin: Derived from the Greek word “kuros,” meaning “supremacy” or “authority.”
- “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might which He brought about in Messiah, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come (Eph. 1:18-21).
- “[E]ven as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life” (John 17:2)
- Strong’s G2962. kurios – Lord, master, owner. Word Origin: Derived from the Greek word “kuros,” meaning “supremacy” or “authority.”
KEY POINT:
Because of His resurrection, we know that Yeshua has been exalted to the seat of King of Kings and Lord of Lords. His authority is absolute and supreme and He is presently governing all the nations to bring righteousness, peace and justice to all humanity.
- The resurrection of mankind provides us with the timeline of Messiah’s return.
- “But now Messiah has been raised from the dead. He became the first fruit of those who are asleep. For since death came by man, the resurrection of the dead also came by man. For as in Adam all die, so also in Messiah all will be made alive. But each in his own order: Messiah the first fruits, then those who are Messiah’s at his coming. Then the end comes, when he will deliver up the Reign to Elohim the Father, when he will have abolished all rule and all authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy that will be abolished is death. For, “He put all things in subjection under his feet.” (cf. Psalm 8:6) But when he says, “All things are put in subjection”, it is evident that he is excepted who subjected all things to him. When all things have been subjected to him, then the Son will also himself be subjected to him who subjected all things to him, that Elohim may be all in all” (1 Cor. 15:20-28)
- What is the timing of the resurrection of the living and the dead?
- #1 – At the bodily return of Messiah.
- “then those who are Messiah’s at His coming” (vs. 23).
- #2 – At the point in history in which Yeshua can hand over a consolidated and conquered kingdom to the Father.
- “Then the end comes, when he will deliver up the Reign to Elohim the Father, when he will have abolished all rule and all authority and power” (vs. 24).
- #3 – After all the enemies of Christ on this earth have been subdued.
- “For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet” (vs. 25).
- #4 – The resurrection will be Yeshua’s final victory over God’s enemies when death is defeated once for all.
- “The last enemy that will be abolished is death” (vs. 26)
- #1 – At the bodily return of Messiah.
- What about the first and second resurrection in Revelation 20?
- “Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; and he threw him into the abyss, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he would not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time. Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years” (Rev. 20:1-6)
- Key Points to Consider:
- The conquering work of King Yeshua occurs before His bodily return.
- “From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty” (Rev. 19:15).
- “I will announce the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, ‘You are My Son, today I have fathered You. Ask it of Me, and I will certainly give the nations as Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth as Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron, You shall shatter them like earthenware.’” (Psa. 2:7-9).
- “From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty” (Rev. 19:15).
- The kingdom (i.e. rule and reign of Elohim) is established while Satan is bound.
- Believers are the ones to whom this task is given.
- “But the saints of the Highest One will receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, for all ages to come…[U]ntil the Ancient of Days came and judgment was passed in favor of the saints of the Highest One, and the time arrived when the saints took possession of the kingdom…Then the sovereignty, the dominion and the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Highest One; His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey Him.’
- Believers are the ones to whom this task is given.
- Yeshua taught there was a spiritual resurrection followed by a physical resurrection unto judgment.
- “Truly, truly, I say to you, a time is coming and even now has arrived, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. Do not be amazed at this; for a time is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, and will come out: those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the bad deeds to a resurrection of judgment” (John 5:25-29).
- The conquering work of King Yeshua occurs before His bodily return.
KEY POINT:
The timing of the resurrection is connected with Yeshua’s physical, bodily return to earth to execute final judgment on everyone who is alive at the time and who has ever lived. Until that time, we as His disciples can be confident of victory as the Gospel transforms hearts and the righteous law of God brings blessing to the nations.
“More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Messiah Yeshua my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Messiah, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith, that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead” (Phil. 3:8-11)
- How should we view death as Believers?
- What hope does the resurrection give you?
- What can we expect, will it be good or bad, and what confidence can we have in this hope?
- How about in this life? What is our purpose and mission in the world or is it all irrelevant in light of eternity?

Additional Study Notes
Gen. 5-14: No shrub of the field was yet in the land, and no plant of the field had yet sprung up; for [Elohim](LXX) had not caused it to rain on the land. There was not a man to till the ground, 6 but a [spring](LXX) went up from the land, and watered the whole surface of the ground.
- The importance of life is dependent upon water. Plant life is presented as the sustainer of life within the creation (model). Two factors are introduced as both instrumental and also the purpose of the intended experience for creation and they are 1) moisture from water to spring up vegetation, and 2) mankind to maintain and care for this life giving [sustaining] process. Thus, water is a primary elemental resource for life on erets (H776) [land].
This correlation between life and water, which was literally all around the creation in the Genesis 1 account. Looking to the other witness of this idea in scripture leads us to the Yeshua Himself-the Savior of life. We might expect to see that creation began with the association of water and life, and that; new life in the new creation-death of sin-will too include life’s dependence on water.
- 1Jn 5:6-8 (TS2009) – This is the One that came by water and blood: Yeshua Messiah, not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is the Truth. 7 Because there are three who bear witness: 8 the Spirit, and the water, and the blood. And the three are in agreement.
- Joh 3:4-5 (YLT) – Nicodemus saith unto him, ‘How is a man able to be born, being old? is he able into the womb of his mother a second time to enter, and to be born?’ 5 Jesus answered, ‘Verily, verily, I say to thee, If any one may not be born of water, and the Spirit, he is not able to enter into the reign of God;
- Eph 5:25-27 (TS2009) – Husbands, love your wives, as Messiah also did love the assembly and gave Himself for it, 26 in order to set it apart and cleanse it with the washing of water by the Word, f Footnote: f Rev_19:8-9. 27 in order to present it to Himself a splendid assembly, not having spot or wrinkle or any of this sort, but that it might be set-apart and blameless.
- Another observation is water flowed from Eden to sustain life in the Garden and three other locations of note. The author’s description of the locations in association to known geographic labels is an indication that these were the very same locations during the time of creation. For instance, the river Gihon is said to flow through the whole land of Cush. Cush was a descendent of Noach who lived after the deluge. How could this association be valid unless there indeed was knowledge that the Gihon post-flood was exact to its pre-flood locale?
- Gen. 2:8-14 (thecord.life) – 8 [Elohim](LXX) planted a garden eastward, in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 Out of the ground [Elohim](LXX) made every tree to grow that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food, including the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10 A river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it was parted and became the source of four rivers. 11 The name of the first is Pishon: it flows through the whole land of [Havilah], (mss) where there is gold; 12 and the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and onyx stone are also there. 13 The name of the second river is Gihon. It is the same river that flows through the whole land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is Hiddekel. This is the one which flows in front of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.
