24:1 Abraham was old, and well advanced in age. YHWH had blessed Abraham in all. 2 Abraham said to his servant, the elder of his house, who ruled over all that he had, “Please put your hand under my loin. 3 I will make you swear by [the Elohim of the heavens and the land],(LXX) that you shall not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live. 4 But you shall go to my country, and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son Isaac.” 5 The servant said to him, “What if the woman isn't willing to follow me to this land? Must I bring your son again to the land you came from?” 6 Abraham said to him, “Beware that you don't bring my son there again. 7 The [Elohim](LXX)(mss) of the heavens—who took me from my father's house, and from the land of my birth, who spoke to me, and who swore to me, saying, ‘I will give this land to your seed—he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. 8 If the woman isn't willing to follow you, then you shall be clear from this oath to me. Only you shall not bring my son there again.” 9 The servant put his hand under the loin of Abraham his lord, and swore to him concerning this word. 10 The servant took ten of his lord's camels, and departed, having a variety of good things of his lord's with him. He arose, and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor. 11 He made the camels kneel down outside the city by the well of water at the time of evening, the time that women go out to draw water. 12 He said, “The [Elohim](LXX)(mss) of my lord Abraham, please give me success today, and show kindness to my lord Abraham. 13 Behold, I am standing by the spring of water. The daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. 14 Let it happen, that the young lady to whom I will say, ‘Please let down your pitcher, that I may drink,' then she says, ‘Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink,'—let her be the one you have proven for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my lord.” 15 Before he had finished speaking [in his mind],(LXX) behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her pitcher on her shoulder. 16 The young lady was very beautiful to look at, a virgin. No man had known her. She went down to the spring, filled her pitcher, and came up. 17 The servant ran to meet her, and said, “Please give me a drink, a little water from your pitcher.” 18 She said, “Drink, my lord.” She hurried, and let down her pitcher on her hand, and gave him a drink. 19 When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will also draw for your camels, until they have finished drinking.” 20 She hurried, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again to the well to draw, and drew for all his camels. 21 The man looked steadfastly at her, remaining silent, to know whether [Elohim](mss) had made his journey prosperous or not. 22 As the camels had done drinking, the man took a golden ring weighing a beqa, [which he put on her nose,](LXX)(mss) and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold, 23 and said, “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me. Is there room in your father's house for us to stay?” 24 She said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.” 25 She said moreover to him, “We have both straw and feed enough, and room to lodge in.” 26 The man bowed his head, and did bow down to [Elohim].(mss) 27 He said, “Blessed be [the Elohim](LXX) of my lord Abraham, who has not forsaken his loving kindness and his truth toward my lord. As for me, [He](mss) has led me on the way to the house of my lord's relatives.” 28 The young lady ran, and told her mother's house about these words. 29 Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban. [He](LXX)(mss) ran out to the man, to the spring. 30 When he saw the ring, and the bracelets on his sister's hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, “This is what the man said to me,” he came to the man. Behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring. 31 He said, “Come in, you blessed of [Elohim].(mss) Why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.” 32 The man came into the house, and he unloaded the camels. He gave straw and feed for the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. 33 Food was set before him to eat, but he said, “I will not eat until I have told my message.” Laban said, “Speak on.” 34 He said, “I am Abraham's servant. 35 [The Lord](mss) has blessed my lord greatly. He has become great. [He](mss) has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male servants and maids, and camels and donkeys. 36 Sarah, my lord's wife, bore a son to my lord when she was old. He has given all that he has to him. 37 My lord made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live, 38 but you shall go to my father's house, and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son.' 39 I asked my lord, ‘What if the woman will not follow me?' 40 He said to me, ‘[Elohim],(LXX)(mss) before whom I walk, will send his angel with you, and prosper your way. You shall take a wife for my son from my relatives, and of my father's house. 41 Then you will be clear from my oath, when you come to my relatives. If they don't give her to you, you shall be clear from my oath.' 42 I came today to the spring, and said, ‘[Elohim](mss) of my lord Abraham, if now you do prosper my way which I go— 43 behold, I am standing by this spring of water. Let it happen, that the maiden who comes out to draw, to whom I will say, “Please give me a little water from your pitcher to drink,” 44 then she tells me, “Drink, and I will also draw for your camels,”—let her be the woman whom is proven for my lord's son.' 45 Before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her pitcher on her shoulder. She went down to the spring, and drew. I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.' 46 She hurried and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, ‘Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink.' So I drank, and she also gave the camels a drink. 47 I asked her, and said, ‘Whose daughter are you?' She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bore to him.' I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her hands. 48 I bowed my head, and did bow down to [Elohim],(LXX)(mss) and blessed the [Elohim](LXX)(mss) of my lord Abraham, who had led me in the right way to take my lord's brother's daughter for his son. 49 Now if you will deal kindly and truly with my lord, tell me. If not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.” 50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered, “The thing proceeds from [Elohim].(mss) We can't speak to you bad or good. 51 Behold, Rebekah is before you. Take her, and go, and let her be your lord's son's wife, as [Elohim](mss) has spoken.” 52 When Abraham's servant heard their words, he bowed himself down to the land Bereshiyt (Genesis) 24:1-67
before the LORD.(LXX)(mss) 53 The servant brought out jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and clothing, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave precious things to her brother and her mother. 54 They ate and drank, he and the men who were with him, and stayed all night. They rose up in the morning, and he said, “Send me away to my lord.” 55 Her brother and her mother said, “Let the young lady stay with us a few days, at least ten. After that she will go.” 56 He said to them, “Don't hinder me, [seeing that he](LXX)(mss) has prospered my way. Send me away that I may go to my lord.” 57 They said, “We will call the young lady, and ask her.” 58 They called Rebekah, and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” She said, “I will go.” 59 They sent away Rebekah, their sister, with her nurse, Abraham's servant, and his men. 60 They blessed Rebekah, and said to her, “Our sister, may you be the mother of thousands of ten thousands, and let your seed possess the gate of those who hate them.” 61 Rebekah arose with her ladies. They rode on the camels, and followed the man. The servant took Rebekah, and went his way. 62 Isaac came from the way of Beer Lahai Roi, for he lived in the land of the South. 63 Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the evening. He lifted up his eyes and looked. Behold, there were camels coming. 64 Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she got off the camel. 65 She said to the servant, “Who is the man who is walking in the field to meet us?” The servant said, “It is my lord.” She took her veil, and covered herself. 66 The servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. 67 Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife. He loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.

- Genesis 24:50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered, “The thing proceeds from [Elohim].(mss) We can’t speak to you bad or good. 51 Behold, Rebekah is before you. Take her, and go, and let her be your lord’s son’s wife, as [Elohim](mss) has spoken.” 52 When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed himself down to the land
before the LORD.(LXX)(mss) 53 The servant brought out jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and clothing, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave precious things to her brother and her mother. - Genesis 24:54 They ate and drank, he and the men who were with him, and stayed all night. They rose up in the morning, and he said, “Send me away to my lord.” 55 Her brother and her mother said, “Let the young lady stay with us a few days, at least ten. After that she will go.” 56 He said to them, “Don’t hinder me, [seeing that he](LXX)(mss) has prospered my way. Send me away that I may go to my lord.” 57 They said, “We will call the young lady, and ask her.” 58 They called Rebekah, and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” She said, “I will go.”
- Genesis 24:59 They sent away Rebekah, their sister, with her nurse, Abraham’s servant, and his men.
- Galatians 3:16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He doesn’t say, “To seeds”, as of many, but as of one, “To your seed”, which is Messiah.
- Genesis 24:62-66 Isaac came from the way of Beer Lahai Roi, for he lived in the land of the South.
- Genesis 24:67 Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife. He loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.
- Isaac is forty years old (cf. Genesis 25:20)
- Genesis 23:1 Sarah lived one hundred twenty-seven years. This was the length of Sarah’s life.
- Sarah is called the “free woman” and “our mother” in Galatians and allegorically represented as the new Jerusalem that is above.
- Galatians 4:22-31 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the servant, and one by the free woman. 23 However, the son by the servant was born according to the flesh, but the son by the free woman was born through promise. 24 These things contain an allegory, for these are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children to bondage, which is Hagar. 25 For this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and answers to the Jerusalem that exists now, for she is in bondage with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, [and she is our mother].(mss) 27 For it is written, “Rejoice, you barren who don’t bear. Break out and shout, you who don’t travail. For the desolate women have more children than her who has a husband.” (cf. Isaiah 54:1) 28 Now [you],(LXX) brothers, as Isaac was, are children of promise. 29 But as then, he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now. 30 However, what does the Scripture say? “Throw out the servant and her son, for the son of the servant will not inherit with the son of the free woman.” (cf. Genesis 21:10) 31 So then, brothers, we are not children of a servant, but of the free woman.
- Galatians 3:26-29 For you are all children of God, through faith in Messiah Yeshua. 27 For as many of you as were immersed into Messiah have put on Messiah. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Messiah Yeshua. 29 If you are Messiah’s, then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to promise.
- Sarah is called the “free woman” and “our mother” in Galatians and allegorically represented as the new Jerusalem that is above.
- Genesis 23:2 Sarah died in Kiriath Arba, [which is in the valley],(LXX) also called Hebron, in the land of Canaan. Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.
- Joshua 14:13-15 Joshua blessed him; and he gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance. 14 Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he followed YHWH, the Elohim of Israel wholeheartedly. 15 Now the name of Hebron before was Kiriath Arba, after the greatest man among the Anakim. Then the land had rest from war.
- Judges 1:10-12 Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron. The name of Hebron before that was Kiriath Arba. They struck Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai. 11 From there he went against the inhabitants of Debir. The name of Debir before that was Kiriath Sepher. 12 Caleb said, “I will give Achsah my daughter as woman to the man who strikes Kiriath Sepher, and takes it.”
- Genesis 23:19 After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre, that is, Hebron, in the land of Canaan. 20 The field, and the cave that is in it, were deeded to Abraham by the sons of Heth as a possession for a burial place.
Summary
Context and coherence (Nehemiah 8:8)
- Our portion today returns us to the teaching of scripture around marriage.
“Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. If anyone thinks he knows anything, he has not yet known as it is necessary to know” (1 Cor.8:1-2).
- Learning how to love is the sign of true discipleship.
- “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).
Selah.
- As husbands, we know the standard is high — “as Messiah loved the ekklesia“.
- But what does it really mean to love our wives? And how do we know that we are doing it well?
- What about for the wives?
- What does it mean to submit to your husband? How do you know how well you’re doing?
- Again, the standard is high — “as unto the Lord”.
Selah.
- One of the ways that knowledge puffs us up is by making us think that we are someone different than we really are.
“But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not just hearers who deceive themselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was” (Jam. 1:22-24).
- Learning is important but if there’s no fruit then what’s the point?
- My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples” (John 15:8).
“[They are] always learning but never able to come to the knowledge of the truth” (2 Tim. 3:7).
- The knowledge of the truth comes as a result of repentance, which is a gift from God that He grants to the humble in heart.
- God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, [that] they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will” (2 Tim. 2:24–26).
- “But He gives a greater grace. Therefore, it says, ‘God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble’” (Jam. 4:6).
- Story of the (Un)Freezer
- As silly as these experiences are, they have a profound impact on our marriages and often fester out of sight from our public personas.
KEY POINT:
Our marriages will be stronger when we bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Messiah (Gal. 6:2).
- When we simply teach knowledge about the ideal husband or wife, we often fail to meet people where they are at.
- Even in Messiah, men are still men and women are still women. Growing in maturity does not mean we will not make mistakes or struggle to understand our spouse or to accept those faults that can annoy us.
KEY POINT:
For biblical love to mature to its fullness in marriage, our spouse has to be imperfect.
- Part of the reason we don’t often share the details of the marital spats in our homes is because the “what” is often so silly and insignificant that we’re often a little embarrassed, aren’t we?
- What does it mean to love our wives and how do we know when we’re doing it well?
- There are two aspects of what it means to be male that I want to talk about specifically today.
- First, men are wired for mission. We could talk at length about this in the context of the dominion mandate given to Adam.
- “God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth” (Gen. 1:28).
- “[Adam] was to be fruitful (productive), to multiply and fill the earth (reproductive), and to exercise dominion (ordering the world)” (Foster, p.176).
- “God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth” (Gen. 1:28).
- When it comes to loving our wives, it’s easy to be very “mission focused”.
- I think it’s safe to say for most men, the mission is to make and keep our wives happy, healthy and content.
- In this paradigm, our role in marriage is to find the things that make them happy and get and do more of that.
- Equally as important is to identify the things that make our wives unhappy and get rid of those things.
- Mission is also how we relate to ourselves. Most men need four things to be happy — health, wealth, respect from others, and marital intimacy (i.e. sex).
- Almost everything we desire and pursue in life falls into one of these four categories.
- Since these four things are the most fundamental desires of every man, it’s hu-MAN nature that we assume that our wives also need the same things to be happy.
- Men also tend more towards transactional relationships.
- A transactional relationship can be defined as one where each person does things for the other because they anticipate getting something in return. This type of give-and-take arrangement is intended to benefit each person involved.
- This is what a man experiences in most of his work relationships and with his buddies.
- Some of the benefits of transactional relationships include:
- There’s a mutual give and take.
- Expectations tend to be clear.
- Such relationships can be efficient and productive.
- They help support goal attainment.
- When you combine being mission-focused with being more comfortable with transactional relationships, it’s easier to understand why we struggle with knowing how to love our wives the way they need us to.
- Another gap between the ideal and reality for marriage relates to how we “love ourselves”.
- “In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Messiah does the ekklesia — for we are members of His body” (Eph. 5:28-29).
- Without overgeneralizing, most men are more attentive to physical needs that emotional needs.
- Harder to realize that loving my wife involves more than just taking care of her practical needs.
- Without overgeneralizing, most men are more attentive to physical needs that emotional needs.
- “In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Messiah does the ekklesia — for we are members of His body” (Eph. 5:28-29).
KEY POINT:
Our wives need more emotional connection, and an overly transactional relationship can create distance and lack of intimacy.
- Most men also struggle with anger, and this can definitely affect the marriage relationship.
- Anger is often born out of frustration that the mission to make her happy is not going as planned.
- Anger is also a result of unmet expectations.
- Transactional relationships can cause us to be less aware of how our practical expressions of love do not meet her need for compassion and emotional connection.
- Ladies, what does it mean to submit to your husbands? And how do you know when you’re doing it well?
- Comments from Faith Dean:
- “We need to trust our husbands, even if they do things a different way or with what we perceive to be a lack of skill. This speaks to the age-old question of men “do I have what it takes” and if we do not show trust, it means we (possibly) do not think you have what it takes, which will ultimately lead to apathy and abdication.”
- “We need to remember that showing respect often is transactional in its simplest form. Not that you can only respond to respectful actions/words, but that you are simply wired to see the world in a way that interprets cost/benefit analysis differently than how women approach – i.e. via groupthink, negotiation, considering the needs of the weakest, nurturing, etc.”
- “Men don’t need the vast amount of connection that women do, at least not on a surface emotional level. They do crave connection, but it is often through practical forms such as through physical intimacy, actively being involved in a shared interest of some kind, having their physical nurturing met (i.e. new socks, a hot meal, a peaceful sanctuary to come home to) and not as much of an abstract “I feel separate somehow but don’t really know what’s wrong” type of way. You are not as intuitive, so potentially cannot realize a lack of connection at all until we say something, and by then the disconnectedness has been going on for a long time. By meeting your physical needs through transaction, that is the key to opening the heart to emotional connection, which is what we need.”
- “We need to let you lead, full stop.”
- “Because you are not as intuitive, we as wives must communicate our needs clearly. Because you don’t necessarily “sense” what’s wrong, I have to be able to tell you in a straightforward way, ideally at a time when emotions are not running high, though this is not always possible. And then I have to give time for you to process without using the punishment of coldness to manipulate you.”
- “We have to be the “happy pop-up” and not expect you to read our minds and remember little details that we are naturally more gifted to remember. At the end of the day, you are far more benefited by me stating the date of my birthday, the fact that I would like a card, and the name of the restaurant I’d like to go to. Sometimes there will be a chance for you to be spontaneous, but our husbands should not constantly feel like they’re going to be in trouble if they don’t act as romantically as we think they should.”
- Comments from Faith Dean:
- For all of us, marital disagreements will be an inevitable part of life.
- Strife can divide us as couples and create a painful impasse that prolongs the hurt and impacts the peace throughout the home. What are some tools to break through?
- “Nevertheless, each of you must also love his own woman even as himself; and let the woman see that she respects her husband” (Eph. 5:33).
- What’s not obvious in most translations is that there is an order and sequence to the actions of each spouse.
- “[B]ut you also, everyone in particular — let each his own wife so love as himself, and the wife — that (#2443) she may reverence the husband” (Eph. 5:33 YLT98).
- G2443. hina — “in order that, so that”.
- Usage: The Greek conjunction “hina” is primarily used to express purpose, result, or intent. It often introduces a subordinate clause that explains the purpose or result of the action in the main clause. It is a common conjunction in the New Testament, used to convey the intended outcome or purpose of an action or statement.
- G2443. hina — “in order that, so that”.
- “[B]ut you also, everyone in particular — let each his own wife so love as himself, and the wife — that (#2443) she may reverence the husband” (Eph. 5:33 YLT98).
KEY POINT:
Our wives’ submission is the outcome and result — not the precursor — to loving them well.
- Men, we need to repent of any mindset that causes us to withhold love from our wives because we don’t think that they are submitting to us.
- This same principle applies to our children.
- “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” (Eph. 6:4).
KEY POINTS:
Husbands, we need to learn to love our wives in such a way that submission to our headship is a natural outcome of our marriage.
Wives, the more you actively help your husband understand how he can show his love for you, the more he will make it his mission in life.

Insight influenced by the above self-reflection on my failure to love my wife according to Ephesians 5:25-33
YHWH’s heart is free from unrighteousness. His heart is always healthy. He knows the condition of His heart at all times. Yeshua has a heart like His Father. Mankind was created with a clean heart with the ability to express the fruit of the Spirit. When Adam sinned, his heart was permanently broken, unable to be restored. As a result, all the descendants of Adam were born with the condition of a corruptible heart.
Through Yeshua, the second Adam, every believer has the ability to have their heart restored. By the power and teaching of the Holy Spirit. However, the heart must be in a healthy condition in order to express the righteousness of Elohim. To express the fruit of the spirit is the true purpose our hearts must operate from.
Gal 5:22-26 KJV – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, or envying one another.
So, according to Eph. 5:25-33, how then do I love my wife? There has always been a less courageous route set before me to continue course-correction to maintain a level of happiness between us that appears loving but never qualifies nor meets the commandments standard to agapaō my woman as Messiah loves the assembly, and gave Himself up for. Sadly enough, this has been the choice I have so often clung to like a terrified adolescent boy unable to reach out through the fear of childhood trauma and grab hold of the restorative power promised by the Messiah (2 Cor. 5:18-19).
At this point [during the strife], however, the Most High knew in His perfect timing that I was ready to take hold of the call (Eph. 5:25-33). Further, my heart was ready to humbly cry out for redemption. In simple speech, I was ready to look in the mirror! Not just a glance, avoiding the chance of truly seeing the condition of my heart. But to now gaze long and attentively. Which led me to understand how deeply insecure I was inside. Unable to love her because I did not love myself. I learned to shield my heart at an early age to not allow the pain of not being affirmed in love, safety, appreciation, and value. The things we need from our parents to function from infancy through maturity. The path of courage is a hard road to tread, but I was given a glimpse, in a dream, during this period of trial: a version of myself coming home to my family as a lover of her first, and the children in kind. I woke up the next morning reassured that the Most High was setting before me the opportunity of repentance and forgiveness. A chance to fulfill the directive to love my wife as the Messiah loves His flock. A love of self that allows cherishing and nourishing the woman He has given me as He intended. I did not hesitate to share with her my response to abdicating my responsibility of what she had been trying to communicate to me for far too long. The results have been both liberating for me, her, and the family. The closeness has been something we honestly haven’t experienced since the early phase of our marriage. I pray every morning that Abba helps me to know the condition of my heart; to help me guard it so it can produce love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, and self-control: towards myself, my wife, my family, and the assembly.

Blessing of Married Couples
May YHWH who blessed our fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and our mothers Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah, bless these couples. Guide them further on their life’s journey. Let them find favor in the eyes of those who see them together and let them continue to build a home worthy of praise where they will find tranquility in their hearts all their lives. May all their endeavors be blessed in the Name of Yeshua our Messiah. Amen.
Love Defined
אָהַב ahav (H157) literally means “I will give” and is equivalent to the Greek word ἀγαπάω agapaō (G25) which refers to devoted love and affection for someone or something (cf. Genesis 22:2; Genesis 25:28; Genesis 27:9; Genesis 29:18; Exodus 20:6; Exodus 21:5; Leviticus 19:18; Deuteronomy 6:5; Deuteronomy 10:19; 1 Samuel 20:17; Psalms 11:7; Psalms 119:47; Matthew 5:43-44; Matthew 6:24; Mark 12:30-31; John 3:19; John 11:5; John 14:15; Romans 13:8).
Husbands and Wives
Genesis 1:27-28 Elohim created man in his own image. In image of Elohim he created him; male and female he created them. 28 Elohim blessed them, [saying], “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the land, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the heavens, and over the livestock, [and over all the wild animals of the land], [and over all the creatures that crawl] on the land.”
1 Corinthians 11:2-3, 11-12 Now I praise you, brothers, that you remember me in all things, and hold firm the traditions, even as I delivered them to you. 3 But I would have you know that the head of every man is Messiah, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Messiah is Elohim… 11 Nevertheless, neither is the woman independent of the man, nor the man independent of the woman, in the Master. 12 For as woman came from man, so a man also comes through a woman; but all things are from Elohim.
1 Corinthians 7:1-7 Now concerning the things about which you wrote to me: it is good for a man not to touch a woman. 2 But, because of sexual immoralities, let each man have his own woman, and let each woman have her own husband. 3 Let the husband give his woman her marital duty (cf. Exodus 21:10), and likewise also the woman her husband. 4 The woman doesn’t have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise also the husband doesn’t have authority over his own body, but the woman does. 5 Don’t deprive one another, unless it is by consent for a season, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer, and may be together again, that Satan doesn’t tempt you because of your lack of self-control. 6 But this I say by way of concession, not of commandment. 7 For I wish that all men were like me. However, each man has his own gift from Elohim, one of this kind, and another of that kind.
Wives
Genesis 3:16 To the woman he said, “I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth. You will bear children in pain. Your desire will be for your husband, and he, he will rule over you.”
“וְהוּא יִמְשָׁל־בָּךְ” vehu yimshol bach …And he (וְהוּא), he will rule (יִמְשָׁל) over you (בָּךְ)” Rule – מָשַׁל mashal (H4910) literally means to compare one thing to another in the sense of a rule of measurement, often a proverb or parable. For example, the Hebrew word for “Proverbs” is Sefer Mishlei (literally meaning “Book of Parables”) which contains guidance for living a wise, moral, and righteous life, in the form of proverbs and parables. Often, a proverb or parable is a story of comparisons or measuring one thing against another (cf. Genesis 1:18; Genesis 4:7; Genesis 24:2; Genesis 45:8; Exodus 21:8; Deuteronomy 15:5-6; Psalms 78:2; Proverbs 22:7; Isaiah 3:12). מָשַׁל mashal is equivalent to the Greek word παραβολή parabolē (G3850) which is a placing of one thing by the side of another, juxtaposition, as of ships in battle. It is further defined as a concise, forcefully expressive, and instructive saying involving some likeness or comparison and having the nature of or expressing a precept giving instructions or giving or conveying a warning or reprimand (cf. Matthew 13:3, 10, 13, 34-35; Matthew 22:1; Luke 8:10; John 16:25). As it relates to a husband and woman, it’s apparent that a husband’s responsibility is to teach his woman and provide guidance for living a wise, moral, and righteous life (cf. 1 Corinthians 14:34-35; 1 Timothy 2:11-15; Ephesians 5:22-28; Colossians 3:18; Titus 2:5; 1 Peter 3:1).
In the sense of governance, מָשַׁל mashal means to rule, have dominion, or reign and is equivalent to the Greek word κυριεύω kyrieuō (G2961) to be lord of, to rule, have dominion over (cf. Luke 22:25; Romans 6:9; Romans 7:1; Romans 14:9; 2 Corinthians 1:24).
Proverbs 19:13 …A woman’s quarrels are a continual dripping.
Proverbs 21:9 It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop than to share a house with a contentious woman.
Proverbs 27:15 A continual dropping on a rainy day and a contentious woman are alike: 16 restraining her is like restraining the wind, or like grasping oil in his right hand.
1 Peter 3:1-6 In the same way, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands, so that, even if any don’t obey the Word, they may be won by the behavior of their wives without a word, 2 seeing your pure behavior in fear. 3 Let your beauty come not from the outward adorning of braiding your hair, and of wearing gold ornaments or of putting on fine clothing, 4 but from the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in sight of Elohim. 5 For this is how in the past the holy women who hoped in Elohim also adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands. 6 So Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him master, whose children you now are if you do well and are not put in fear by any terror.
1 Corinthians 11:5-6, 7-10 But every woman praying or prophesying with her head uncovered dishonors her head. For it is one and the same thing as if she were shaved. 6 For if a woman is not covered, let her hair also be cut off. But if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut off or be shaved, let her be covered…but the woman is the glory of the man. 8 For man is not from woman, but woman from man; 9 for man wasn’t created for the woman, but woman for the man. 10 For this cause the woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels.
1 Corinthians 14:34 Let the wives be quiet in the assemblies, for it has not been permitted for them to be talking except in submission, as the Torah also says (cf. Genesis 3:16), 35 if they desire to learn anything. “Let them ask their own husbands at home, for it is shameful for a woman to be talking in the assembly.”
Ephesians 5:22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Master. 23 For the husband is the head of the woman, as Messiah also is the head of the assembly, being himself the savior of the body. 24 But as the assembly is subject to Messiah, so let the wives also be to their own husbands in everything. 33…and let the woman see that she respects her husband.
Colossians 3:18 Wives, be in subjection to your husbands, as is fitting in the Master.
1 Timothy 2:9-15 In the same way, that women also adorn themselves in decent clothing, with modesty and propriety, not with braided hair, gold, pearls, or expensive clothing, 10 but with good works, which is appropriate for women professing the fear of Elohim. 11 Let a woman learn in quietness with full submission. 12 But I don’t permit a woman to teach, nor to exercise authority over a man, but to be in quietness. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Chavah. 14 Adam wasn’t deceived, but the woman, being deceived, has fallen into disobedience; 15 but she will be saved through her childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, and holiness with sobriety.
1 Timothy 5:11-15 But refuse younger widows, for when they have grown wanton against Messiah, they desire to marry, 12 having condemnation, because they have rejected their first pledge. 13 Besides, they also learn to be idle, going about from house to house. Not only idle, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not. 14 I desire therefore that the younger widows marry, bear children, rule the household, and give no occasion to the adversary for insulting. 15 For already some have turned away after Satan.
Titus 2:3-5 and that older women likewise be reverent in behavior, not slanderers nor enslaved to much wine, teachers of that which is good, 4 that they may train the young wives to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be sober minded, chaste, watchers at home, kind, being in subjection to their own husbands, that word of Elohim may not be blasphemed.
Subjection – ὑποτάσσω hypotassō (G5293) literally means “to arrange under” and was a Greek military term meaning “to arrange [troop divisions] in a military fashion under the command of a leader”. In non-military use, it was “a voluntary attitude of giving in, cooperating, assuming responsibility, and carrying a burden”. The Hebrew equivalent of is הִכָּנַעְנָה hikana’anah which means to “surrender” in the sense of humbling oneself from the Hebrew word עָנָה ‘anah (H6031) which means “to be brought low” or “afflicted” (cf. Genesis 34:2; Exodus 10:3; Deuteronomy 8:2-3; Deuteronomy 21:14; Deuteronomy 22:24; Deuteronomy 22:29; Psalms 35:13).
Husbands
Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:5 Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his woman, and they will be one flesh.
Genesis 3:17-19 To Adam he said, “Because you have listened to your woman’s voice, and have eaten from the tree, about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You will not eat of it,’ the ground is cursed for your sake. You will eat from it with much labor all the days of your life. 18 It will yield thorns and thistles to you; and you will eat the herb of the field. 19 You will eat bread by the sweat of your face until you return to the ground, for you were taken out of it. For you are dust, and you will return to dust.”
Exodus 21:10-11 If he takes another woman to himself, he will not diminish her food, her clothing, and her marital rights (עוֹנָה onah H5772 and ὁμιλία homilia G3657 = sexual intercourse). 11 If he doesn’t do these three things for her, she may go free without paying any money.
1 Peter 3:7 The husbands, in the same way, live with them according to knowledge, as to the weaker utensil in the feminine way (gynaikeios G1134), giving honor as also being joint heirs of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.
1 Corinthians 11:4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head…7 For a man indeed ought not to have his head covered, because he is the image and glory of Elohim.
Ephesians 5:25-33 Husbands, love your wives, even as Messiah also loved the assembly and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that he might present the assembly to himself gloriously, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without defect. 28 Even so husbands also ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own woman loves himself. 29 For no man ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, even as the Master also does the assembly, 30 because we are members of his body, of his flesh and bones. 31 “For this cause a man will leave his father and mother and will be joined to his woman. Then the two will become one flesh.” (cf. Genesis 2:24) 32 This mystery is great, but I speak concerning Messiah and the assembly. 33 Nevertheless each of you must also love his own woman even as himself.
Colossians 3:19 Husbands, love your wives, and don’t be bitter against them.
1 Timothy 2:8 I desire therefore that the men in every place pray, lifting up holy hands without anger and doubting
Titus 2:1-2, 6-8 But say the things which fit sound doctrine, 2 that older men should be temperate, sensible, sober minded, sound in faith, in love, and in perseverance..6 Likewise, exhort the younger men to be sober minded. 7 In all things show yourself an example of good works. In your teaching, show integrity, seriousness, incorruptibility, 8 and soundness of speech that can’t be condemned, that he who opposes you may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say about us.
