בָּשַׂר basar (H1319) comes from a root word that means “to report” and is concretely represented as “flesh” because when good news was brought a feast with flesh, or meat, was prepared. In ancient times, meat was primarily eaten on special occasions such as a holiday feast, the arrival of guests, or whenever an event occurs that requires a celebration. בָּשַׂר basar is translated as to bear news or tidings (cf. Isaiah 61:1; Luke 4:18), of a messenger (cf. 1 Samuel 4:17); publish (cf. 2 Samuel 1:20); preach (Psalm 40:9); and show forth (cf. Psalm 96:2). בָּשַׂר basar is equivalent to εὐαγγέλιον euangelion (G2098) which means “good news” or “good tidings” and is used 3 times in the Greek Old Testament (cf. 2 Samuel 4:10; 2 Samuel 18:20,25).
Evangelist is from Greek εὐαγγελιστής euangelistes (G2099) “preacher of the gospel,” literally “bringer of good news,” from euangelizesthai “bring good news,” from eu- “good” (see eu-) + angellein “announce,” from angelos “messenger” (angel).
The Good News (Gospel), as proclaimed by Yeshua and the apostles, is 1) the Messiah suffered and died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 2) that he was buried and raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and 3) that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in Yeshua’s name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Luke 24:45-47; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
Luke 24:45 Then he opened their minds, that they might understand the Scriptures. 46 He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Messiah to suffer (cf. Isaiah 53; Psalm 22) and to rise from the dead the third day (cf. Jonah 1:17; Jonah 2:1-6; Daniel 9:26), 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all the nations (cf. Deuteronomy 32:43; Isaiah 42:1-4), beginning at Jerusalem…”
1 Corinthians 15:1 Now I declare to you, brothers, the Good News which I preached to you, which also you received, in which you also stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold firmly the word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Messiah died for our sins according to the Scriptures (cf. Isaiah 53:4-6; Jonah 2:1-6; Daniel 9:26), 4 that he was buried (cf. Psalm 16:10), that he was raised on the third day (cf. Jonah 1:17; Psalm 16:10; Jonah 2:6) according to the Scriptures.
Acts 1:1 – 2:11
1:1 The first book I wrote, Theophilus, concerned all that Yeshua began both to do and to teach, 2 until the day in which he was received up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the emissaries whom he had chosen. 3 To these he also showed himself alive after he suffered, by many proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking about Elohim’s Kingdom. 4 Being assembled together with them, he commanded them, “Don’t depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which you heard from me. 5 For Yochanan indeed immersed in water, but you will be immersed in the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, are you now restoring the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It isn’t for you to know times or seasons which the Father has set within his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth.” … 2:1 Now when the day of Shavuot had come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 Suddenly there came from the heavens a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 Tongues like fire appeared and were distributed to them, and one sat on each of them. 4 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak. 5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under the heavens. 6 When this sound was heard, the multitude came together and were bewildered, because everyone heard them speaking in his own language. 7 They were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Behold, aren’t all these who speak Galileans? 8 How do we hear, everyone in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, 10 Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, the parts of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabians—we hear them speaking in our languages the mighty works of Elohim!”
Acts 15:1-11; Galatians 1:6-9
Acts 15:1 Some men came down from Judea and taught the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised after the custom of Moses, you can’t be saved.” 2 Therefore when Paul and Barnabas had no small discord and discussion with them, they appointed Paul, Barnabas, and some others of them to go up to Jerusalem to the emissaries and elders about this question. 3 They, being sent on their way by the assembly, passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles. They caused great joy to all the brothers. 4 When they had come to Jerusalem, they were received by the assembly and the emissaries and the elders, and they reported everything that Elohim had done with them. 5 But some of the sect of the Pharisees who believed rose up, saying, “It is necessary to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the Torah of Moses.” 6 The emissaries and the elders were gathered together to see about this matter. 7 When there had been much discussion, Peter rose up and said to them, “Brothers, you know that a good while ago Elohim made a choice among you that by my mouth the nations should hear the word of the Good News and believe. 8 Elohim, who knows the heart, witnessed about them, giving them the Holy Spirit, just like he did to us. 9 He made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith. 10 Now therefore why do you tempt Elohim, that you should put a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? 11 But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Yeshua, just as they are.”
Galatians 1:6 I marvel that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Messiah to a different “good news”, 7 but there isn’t another “good news.” Only there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the Good News of Messiah. 8 But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should proclaim to you any “good news” other than that which we preached to you, let him be cursed. 9 As we have said before, so I now say again: if any man preaches to you any “good news” other than that which you received, let him be cursed.
Genesis 22:7-8; John 1:14-29
Genesis 22:7 Isaac spoke to Abraham his father, and said, “My father?” He said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Here is the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” 8 Abraham said, “Elohim will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they both went together.
John 1:14 The Word became flesh and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the only born Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 Yochanan witnessed about him. He cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me, for he was before me.’ ” 16 From his fullness we all received grace upon grace. 17 For the Torah was given through Moses. Grace and truth were realized through Yeshua the Messiah. 18 No one has seen Elohim at any time. The only born Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, has declared him. 19 This is Yochanan’s testimony, when the Judeans sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 He declared, and didn’t deny, but he declared, “I am not the Messiah.” 21 They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.” 22 They said therefore to him, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of YHWH,’ (cf. Isaiah 40:3) as Isaiah the prophet said.” 24 The ones who had been sent were from the Pharisees. 25 They asked him, “Why then do you immerse if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?” 26 Yochanan answered them, “I immerse in water, but among you stands one whom you don’t know. 27 He is the one who comes after me, who is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to loosen.” 28 These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where Yochanan was immersing. 29 The next day, he saw Yeshua coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of Elohim, who takes away the sin of the world!
Psalm 22:1-31; John 19:22-37
Psalm 22:1 My Elohim, my Elohim, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, and from the words of my groaning? 2 My Elohim, I cry in the daytime, but you don’t answer; in the night season, and am not silent. 3 But you are holy, you who inhabit the praises of Israel. 4 Our fathers trusted in you. They trusted, and you delivered them. 5 They cried to you, and were delivered. They trusted in you, and were not disappointed. 6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised by the people. 7 All those who see me mock me. They insult me with their lips. They shake their heads, saying, 8 “He trusts in YHWH. Let him deliver him. Let him rescue him, since he delights in him.” 9 But you brought me out of the womb. You made me trust while at my mother’s breasts. 10 I was thrown on you from my mother’s womb. You are my Elohim since my mother bore me. 11 Don’t be far from me, for trouble is near. For there is no one to help. 12 Many bulls have surrounded me. Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me. 13 They open their mouths wide against me, lions tearing prey and roaring. 14 I am poured out like water. All my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax. It is melted within me. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd. My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You have brought me into the dust of death. 16 For dogs have surrounded me. A company of evildoers have enclosed me, like a lion, my hands and feet. [They have pierced my hands and feet].(DSS)(LXX) 17 I can count all of my bones. They look and stare at me. 18 They divide my garments among them. They cast lots for my clothing. 19 But don’t be far off, YHWH. You are my help. Hurry to help me! 20 Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dog. 21 Save me from the lion’s mouth! Yes, you have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen. 22 I will declare your name to my brothers. Among the assembly, I will praise you. 23 You who fear YHWH, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, glorify him! Stand in awe of him, all you descendants of Israel! 24 For he has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, neither has he hidden his face from him; but when he cried to him, he heard. 25 My praise of you comes in the great assembly. I will pay my vows before those who fear him. 26 The humble shall eat and be satisfied. They shall praise YHWH who seek after him. Let your hearts live forever. 27 All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to YHWH. All the relatives of the nations shall worship before you. 28 For the kingdom is YHWH’s. He is the ruler over the nations. 29 All the rich ones of the earth shall eat and worship. All those who go down to the dust shall bow before him, even he who can’t keep his soul alive. 30 Posterity shall serve him. Future generations shall be told about YHWH. 31 They shall come and shall declare his righteousness to a people that shall be born, for he has done it.
John 19:22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.” 23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Yeshua, took his garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top throughout. 24 Then they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it to decide whose it will be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled, which says, “They parted my garments among them. They cast lots for my clothing.” (cf. Psalm 22:18) Therefore the soldiers did these things. 25 But standing by Yeshua’s cross were his mother, his mother’s sister, Miriam the woman of Klofah, and Miriam Magdalene. 26 Therefore when Yeshua saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour, the disciple took her to his own home. 28 After this, Yeshua, seeing‡ that all things were now finished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I am thirsty!” 29 Now a vessel full of vinegar was set there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop, and held it at his mouth. 30 When Yeshua therefore had received the vinegar, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. 31 Therefore the Judeans, because it was the Preparation Day, so that the bodies wouldn’t remain on the cross on the Sabbath, for that Sabbath was a special one, asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32 Therefore the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with him; 33 but when they came to Yeshua and saw that he was already dead, they didn’t break his legs. 34 However, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. 35 He who has seen has witnessed, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, that you may believe. 36 For these things happened that the Scripture might be fulfilled, “A bone of him will not be broken.” (cf. Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12; Psalm 34:20) 37 Again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they pierced.” (cf. Zechariah 12:10)
Jonah 1:17 – 2:10; Matthew 12:39-40
Jonah 1:17 YHWH prepared a huge fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. 2:1 Then Jonah prayed to YHWH, his Elohim, out of the fish’s belly. 2 He said, “I called because of my affliction to YHWH. He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried. You heard my voice. 3 For you threw me into the depths, in the heart of the seas. The flood was all around me. All your waves and your billows passed over me. 4 I said, ‘I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’ 5 The waters surrounded me, even to the soul. The deep was around me. The weeds were wrapped around my head. 6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains. The earth barred me in forever; yet you have brought my life up from the pit, YHWH my Elohim. 7 “When my soul fainted within me, I remembered YHWH. My prayer came in to you, into your holy temple. 8 Those who regard vain idols forsake their own mercy. 9 But I will slaughter to you with the voice of thanksgiving. I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation belongs to YHWH.” 10 Then YHWH spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah on the dry land.
Matthew 12:39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, but no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the huge fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
John 4:21-24; Acts 4:8-12; Romans 1:16
John 4:21 Yeshua said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship that which you don’t know. We worship that which we know; for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such to be his worshipers. 24 Elohim is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
Acts 4:8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “You rulers of the people and elders of Israel, 9 if we are examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 10 may it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Yeshua the Messiah of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom Elohim raised from the dead, this man stands here before you whole in him. 11 He is ‘the stone which was regarded as worthless by you, the builders, which has become the head of the corner.’ (cf. Psalm 118:22) 12 There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved!”
Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the Good News of Messiah, because it is the power of Elohim for salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first, and also for the Greek.
Acts 2:22-42
2:22 “Men of Israel, hear these words! Yeshua of Nazareth, a man approved by Elohim to you by mighty works and wonders and signs which Elohim did by him among you, even as you yourselves know, 23 him, being delivered up by the determined counsel and foreknowledge of Elohim, you have taken by the hand of lawless men, crucified and killed; 24 whom Elohim raised up, having freed him from the agony of death, because it was not possible that he should be held by it. 25 For David says concerning him, ‘I saw YHWH always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved. 26 Therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced. Moreover my flesh also will dwell in hope, 27 because you will not leave my soul in Sheol, neither will you allow your Holy One to see decay. 28 You made known to me the ways of life. You will make me full of gladness with your presence.’ (cf. Psalm 16:8-11) 29 “Brothers, I may tell you freely of the patriarch David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that Elohim had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, he would raise up the Messiah§ to sit on his throne, 31 he foreseeing this, spoke about the resurrection of the Messiah, that his soul wasn’t left in Sheol, and his flesh didn’t see decay. 32 This Yeshua Elohim raised up, to which we all are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted by the right hand of Elohim, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this which you now see and hear. 34 For David didn’t ascend into the heavens, but he says himself, ‘YHWH said to my Lord, “Sit by my right hand 35 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” ’ (cf. Psalm 110:1) 36 “Let all the house of Israel therefore know certainly that Elohim has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Yeshua whom you crucified.” 37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the emissaries, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 Peter said to them, “Repent and be immersed, every one of you, in the name of Yeshua the Messiah for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are far off, even as many as YHWH our Elohim will call to himself.” 40 With many other words he witnessed and exhorted them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation!” 41 Then those who gladly received his word were immersed. There were added that day about three thousand souls. 42 They continued steadfastly in the emissaries’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer.
What is the gospel according to mainstream Christianity?
“The word gospel literally means “good news” and occurs 93 times in the Bible, exclusively in the New Testament. In Greek, it is the word euaggelion, from which we get our English words evangelist, evangel, and evangelical. The gospel is, broadly speaking, the whole of Scripture; more narrowly, the gospel is the good news concerning Christ and the way of salvation…The key to understanding the gospel is to know why it’s good news…The righteous requirement of the Law is so stringent that no human being could possibly follow it perfectly, in letter or in spirit…we have sinned, and the punishment for sin is death, i.e. separation from Elohim, the source of life…” – GotQuestions.org is the primary site of Got Questions Ministries
Since the word “gospel” means “good news,” when Christians talk about the gospel, they’re simply telling the good news about Jesus. – What Is the Gospel?” by Greg Gilbert, MDiv, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
The gospel is good news—the good news of what Elohim has done in Jesus Christ. – The Gospel Coalition
The gospel can be distilled down to an essence. While not everyone might explain the gospel the same way every time, there are critical elements that should always be included. What are those elements? They are who Jesus is, what He has done and why He has done it. – Campus Crusaders “Cru”
John 7:37-52
7:37 And on the last day, the great of the feast, Yeshua stood and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink! 38 He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said (cf. Deuteronomy 18:15), from within him will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But he said this about the Spirit, which those believing in him were to receive. For the Spirit was not yet given, because Yeshua wasn’t yet glorified. 40 [Some](mss) of the multitude therefore, when they heard these words, said, “This is truly the Prophet.” (cf. Deuteronomy 18:15-19; John 1:45; Acts 3:22; Acts 7:37) 41 Others said, “This is the Messiah.” (cf. Psalm 2:2; Psalm 18:50; Psalm 20:6; Psalm 28:8; Psalm 84:9; Psalm 89:38; Psalm 89:51; Psalm 132:10; Psalm 132:17; Lamentations 4:20; Daniel 9:25-26; Habakkuk 3:13) But some said, “What, does the Messiah come out of Galilee? 42 Hasn’t the Scripture said that the Messiah comes of the seed of David (cf. Jeremiah 23:5; Jeremiah 33:15), and from Bethlehem (cf. Micah 5:2), the village where David was?” 43 So a division arose in the multitude because of him. 44 Some of them would have arrested him, but no one laid hands on him. 45 The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said to them, “Why didn’t you bring him?” 46 The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this man!” 47 The Pharisees therefore answered them, “You aren’t also led astray, are you? 48 Have any of the rulers or any of the Pharisees believed in him? 49 But this multitude that doesn’t know the Torah is cursed.” 50 Nicodemus, he who came to him [before],(mss) being one of them, said to them, 51 “Does our Torah judge a man unless it first hears from him personally and knows what he does?” (cf. Deuteronomy 1:17) 52 They answered him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and see that no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.” (cf. 1 Kings 17:1; 2 Kings 14:25; Isaiah 9:1-7; Matthew 4:13-16)
In Luke 24:27 on the road to Emmaus after His resurrection, Yeshua spoke with two of His followers; “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.”
In Luke 24:42-45, Yeshua appeared to the eleven disciples as they were eating and discussing what was revealed in Scripture to the two men on the road to Emmaus; “They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate before them. Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures”
The Prophet
Commonly translated as “prophet” נָבִיא navi (H5030) literally means “seed inside” and is represented by fruit, since fruit hides the seeds inside it (cf. Luke 8:11). A prophet is one who announces or utters the words or instructions of Elohim received through a vision or dream. Prophets are men or women (cf. Exodus 15:20; Judges 4:4; 2 Kings 22:14) moved by the Holy Spirit (cf. 2 Peter 1:21) to speak the words of Elohim they receive through a vision, dream, or directly spoken by Elohim whereby He puts His words in their mouth (cf. Numbers 12:6; Deuteronomy 18:18). “He who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, exhortation, and consolation…that the assembly may be built up (cf. 1 Corinthians 14:3-5). Because the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets, two or at most three prophets in the Assembly can prophesy one by one, while the others discern. If a revelation is made to another prophet sitting by, the first prophet is to keep silent. This is so all may learn and all may be exhorted (cf. 1 Corinthians 14:29-33).
Deuteronomy 18:15-19
18:15 YHWH your Elohim will raise up to you a prophet from among you, of your brothers, like me. You will listen to him. 16 This is according to all that you desired of YHWH your Elohim in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, “Let me not hear again YHWH my Elohim’s voice, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I not die.” 17 YHWH said to me, “They have well said that which they have spoken. 18 I will raise them up a prophet from among their brothers, like you. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will speak to them all that I will command him. 19 It will happen, that whoever will not listen to my words which he will speak in my name, I will require it of him.
John 1:43-45
1:43 On the next day, he was determined to go out into Galilee, and he found Philip. Yeshua said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Torah (cf. Deuteronomy 18:15) and also the prophets, wrote: Yeshua of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
Acts 3:19-24
3:19 “Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, so that there may come times of refreshing from the presence of YHWH, 20 and that he may send Messiah Yeshua, who was ordained for you before, 21 whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which Elohim spoke long ago by the mouth of his holy prophets. 22 For Moses indeed said to the fathers, ‘YHWH Elohim will raise up a prophet for you from among your brothers, like me. You shall listen to him in all things whatever he says to you. 23 It will be that every soul that will not listen to that prophet will be utterly destroyed from among the people.’ (cf. Deuteronomy 18:15-19) 24 Yes, and all the prophets from Samuel and those who followed after, as many as have spoken, also told of these days.
Acts 7:35-37
7:35 This Moses whom they refused, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—Elohim has sent him as both a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 This man led them out, having worked wonders and signs in Egypt, in the Sea of Suf, and in the wilderness for forty years. 37 This is that Moses who said to the sons of Israel, ‘YHWH our Elohim will raise up a prophet for you from among your brothers, like me.’ (cf. Deuteronomy 18:15)
The Messiah
Most often translated as anointed or anointed one, מָשִׁיחַ mashiach (H4899) comes from a root word that means “to smear with ointment” because oil was smeared on the heads of individuals who were given the office of prophet (cf. 1 Kings 19:16), priest (cf. Exodus 29:7), or king (cf. 1 Samuel 15:1; 1 Samuel 16:12-13; 1 Kings 1:34) as a sign of authority from Elohim. Also used of the dwelling place (tabernacle) in Exodus 40:9. מָשִׁיחַ mashiach is equivalent to the Greek word Χριστός christos (G5547) which means “anointed” (cf. Matthew 1-16; Matthew 27:17; Matthew 27:22; John 4:25).
Psalm 2:1-2
2:1 Why do the nations rage, and the peoples plot a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth take a stand, and the rulers take counsel together, against YHWH, and against his anointed, saying, 3 “Let’s break their bonds apart, and cast their cords from us.”
Psalm 18:50
18:50 He gives great deliverance to his king, and shows loving kindness to his anointed, to David and to his seed, forever more.
Psalm 20:6
20:6 Now I know that YHWH saves his anointed. He will answer him from his holy heaven, with the saving strength of his right hand.
Psalm 28:8
28:8 YHWH is their strength. He is a stronghold of salvation to his anointed.
Psalm 84:9-10
84:9 Behold, Elohim our shield, look at the face of your anointed. 10 For a day in your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my Elohim, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.
Psalm 89:38-52
89:But you have rejected and spurned. You have been angry with your anointed. 39 You have renounced the covenant of your servant. You have defiled his crown in the dust. 40 You have broken down all his hedges. You have brought his strongholds to ruin. 41 All who pass by the way rob him. He has become a reproach to his neighbors. 42 You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries. You have made all of his enemies rejoice. 43 Yes, you turn back the edge of his sword, and haven’t supported him in battle. 44 You have ended his splendor, and thrown his throne down to the ground. 45 You have shortened the days of his youth. You have covered him with shame. Selah. 46 How long, YHWH? Will you hide yourself forever? Will your wrath burn like fire? 47 Remember how short my time is, for what vanity you have created all the children of men! 48 What man is he who shall live and not see death, who shall deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah. 49 Lord, where are your former loving kindnesses, which you swore to David in your faithfulness? 50 Remember, Lord, the reproach of your servants, how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the mighty peoples, 51 With which your enemies have mocked, YHWH, with which they have mocked the footsteps of your anointed one. 52 Blessed be YHWH forever more. Amen, and Amen.
Psalm 132:8-18
132:8 Arise, YHWH, into your resting place, you, and the ark of your strength. 9 Let your priests be clothed with righteousness. Let your saints shout for joy! 10 For your servant David’s sake, don’t turn away the face of your anointed. 11 YHWH has sworn to David in truth. He will not turn from it: “I will set the fruit of your body on your throne. 12 If your children will keep my covenant, my testimony that I will teach them, their children also will sit on your throne forever more.” 13 For YHWH has chosen Zion. He has desired it for his habitation. 14 “This is my resting place forever. I will live here, for I have desired it. 15 I will abundantly bless her provision. I will satisfy her poor with bread. 16 I will also clothe her priests with salvation. Her saints will shout aloud for joy. 17 I will make the horn of David to bud there. I have ordained a lamp for my anointed. 18 I will clothe his enemies with shame, but on himself, his crown will shine.”
Lamentations 4:20
4:20 The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of YHWH, was taken in their pits; of whom we said, under his shadow we will live among the nations.
Daniel 9:25-26
25 Know therefore and discern that from the going out of the commandment to restore and build Jerusalem to the anointed, the prince, will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. It will be built again, with street and moat, even in troubled times. 26 After the sixty-two weeks the anointed will be cut off, and will have nothing. The people of the prince who come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end will be with a flood, and war will be even to the end. Desolations are determined.
Habakkuk 3:13
3:13 You went out for the salvation of your people, for the salvation of your anointed. You crushed the head of the land of wickedness. You stripped them head to foot.
