Bemidbar (Numbers) 5:11-31
5:11 YHWH spoke to Moses, saying, 12 “Speak to the sons of Israel, and tell them: ‘If any man’s wife goes aside and she will transgress with him a transgression, 13 and a man lies with her with the seed of copulation, and it is hidden from the eyes of her husband and this is kept concealed, and she is unclean, there is no witness against her, and she wasn’t seized; 14 and a zealous spirit comes on him, and he is zealous of his wife and she is unclean; or if a zealous spirit comes on him, and he is zealous of his wife and she isn’t unclean; 15 then the man will bring his wife to the priest, and will bring her offering for her: one tenth of an ephah of barley meal. He will pour no oil on it, nor put frankincense on it, for it is an offering of zeal, an offering of remembrance, making a remembrance of iniquity. 16 The priest will bring her near, and set her before YHWH. 17 The priest will take holy waters in a vessel of clay; and the priest will take some of the dirt that is on the floor of the tabernacle and put it into the waters. 18 The priest will set the woman before YHWH, and he will loose the head of the woman, and put the offering of remembrance in her hands, which is the offering of zeal. The priest will have in his hand the waters of bitterness that causes the [spitting upon].(MTT) 19 The priest will cause her to swear and will tell the woman, “If no man has lain with you, and if you haven’t gone aside to uncleanness, being under your husband, be free from these waters of bitterness causing the [spitting upon].(MTT) 20 But if you have gone astray, being under your husband, and if you are unclean, and the man placed in you his copulation, apart from your husband—” 21 then the priest will cause the woman to swear with the swearing of the oath, and the priest will tell the woman, “May YHWH give you for an oath and for a swearing among your people, in YHWH giving your midsection a falling, and your womb a swelling; 22 and these waters causing the [spitting upon](MTT) will come in your abdomen to make the womb swell, and to make the midsection fall.” The woman will say, “Amen, Amen.” 23 The priest will write these oaths in a book, and he will wipe them into the waters of bitterness [that brings a curse].(LXX) 24 He will make the woman drink the waters of bitterness causing the [spitting upon];(MTT) and the waters causing the [spitting upon](MTT) will enter into her and become bitter. 25 The priest will take the offering of zeal out of the woman’s hand, and will wave the offering before YHWH, and bring it to the altar. 26 The priest will take a handful of the offering, as its remembrance portion, and burn it on the altar, and afterward will make the woman drink the waters. 27 When he has made her drink the waters, then it will happen, if she is unclean and has committed a trespass against her husband, that the waters causing the [spitting upon](MTT) will enter into her and become bitter, and her womb swells and her midsection falls; and the woman will be an oath among her people. 28 If the woman isn’t unclean, but is clean; then she will be free, and will conceive seed. 29 This is the Torah of zeal, when a woman, being under her husband, goes astray, and is unclean, 30 or when a zealous spirit comes on a man, and he is zealous of his wife; then he will set the woman before YHWH, and the priest will execute on her all this Torah. 31 The man will be free from iniquity, and that woman will bear her iniquity.’ ”
Prophets Portion (P)
Hosea 4:11-19
4:11 Whoring, wine, and new wine take away understanding. 12 My people consult with their wooden idol, and answer to a stick of wood. Indeed the spirit of whoring has led them astray, and they have been unfaithful to their Elohim. 13 They slaughter on the tops of the mountains, and burn incense on the hills, under oaks, poplars, and [shady](LXX) terebinths, because its shade is good. Therefore your daughters whore, and your brides commit adultery. 14 I will not punish your daughters when they whore, nor your brides when they commit adultery; because the men separate themselves with whores, and they slaughter with the prostitutes; so the people without understanding will come to ruin. 15 “Though you, Israel, whore, yet don’t let Judah offend; and don’t come to Gilgal, neither go up to Beth Aven, nor swear, ‘As YHWH lives.’ 16 For Israel has behaved extremely stubbornly, like a stubborn heifer. Then how will YHWH feed them like a lamb in a meadow? 17 Ephraim is joined to idols, [has placed stumbling blocks](LXX) against himself. 18 Their drink has become sour. They whore continually. Her rulers dearly love their shameful way. 19 The wind has wrapped her up in its wings; and they will be disappointed because of their slaughters.
Apostolic Portion (A)
Ephesians 5:25-33; Revelation 2:18-29
Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Messiah also loved the assembly and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that he might present the assembly to himself gloriously, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without defect. 28 Even so husbands also ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own woman loves himself. 29 For no man ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, even as [Messiah](mss) also does the assembly, 30 because we are members of his body, of his flesh and bones. 31 “For this cause a man will leave his father and mother and will be joined to his wife. Then the two will become one flesh.” (cf. Genesis 2:24) 32 This mystery is great, but I speak concerning Messiah and the assembly. 33 Nevertheless each of you must also love his own woman even as himself; and let the woman see that she respects her husband.
Revelation 2:18 To the angel of the assembly in Thyatira write: “The Son of Elohim, who has his eyes like a flame of fire, and his feet are like burnished brass, says these things: 19 “I know your works, your love, faith, service, patient endurance, and that your last works are more than the first. 20 But I have this against you, that you tolerate [the](mss) woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. She teaches and seduces my servants to commit sexual immorality and to eat things slaughtered to idols. 21 I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. 22 Behold, I will throw her into a sickbed and those who commit adultery with her into a bed of great oppression, unless they repent of [her](mss) works. 23 I will kill her children with Death, and all the assemblies will know that I am he who searches the minds and hearts. I will give to each one of you according to your deeds. 24 But to you I say, to the rest who are in Thyatira—as many as don’t have this teaching, who don’t know what some call ‘the deep things of Satan’—to you I say, I am not putting any other burden on you. 25 Nevertheless, hold that which you have firmly until I come. 26 He who overcomes, and he who keeps my works to the end, to him I will give authority over the nations. 27 He will rule them with a rod of iron, shattering them like clay pots, (cf. Psalms 2:9) as I also have received of my Father; 28 and I will give him the morning star. 29 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.”
Additional Portion (ADD)
Sirach, or Wisdom of Sirach, and also known as the Book of Ecclesiasticus (abbreviated Ecclus.) or Ben Sira, is a work of ethical teachings, from approximately 200 to 175 B.C., written by the Jewish scribe Ben Sira of Jerusalem, on the inspiration of his father Joshua son of Sirach, sometimes called Jesus son of Sirach or Yeshua ben Eliezer ben Sira. The Sirach was almost completely uncovered in Hebrew in the Dead Sea Scrolls, at Masada, and the Cairo Geniza. The multiplicity of manuscript fragments uncovered in the Cairo Genizah evidence its authoritative status among Egyptian Jewry until the Middle Ages. Quotes from Sirach can be found in Rabbinic literature in multiple places including the Talmud in Bava Kamma 92b:13 and Hagigah 13a:2. Additionally, the Gospels and other Apostolic Scriptures quote from the Book of Sirach including the Song of Miriam in Luke 1:52 (cf. Sirach 10:14); the description of the seed in Mark 4:5, 16–17 (cf. Sirach 40:15); the statement by Yeshua in Matthew 7:16,20 (cf. Sirach 27:6); and Ya’aqov (James) 1:19 (cf. Sirach 5:11).
Sirach 26:1-18
26:1 Happy is the husband of a good woman. The number of his days will be doubled. 2 A brave woman gives joy to her husband. He will fulfill his years in peace. 3 A good woman is a great gift. She will be given to those who fear the Lord. 4 Whether a man is rich or poor, a good heart makes a cheerful face at all times. 5 Of three things my heart was afraid, and I was fearful in the face of a fourth: The slander of a city, the assembly of a multitude, and a false accusation. All these are more grievous than death. 6 A grief of heart and sorrow is a woman who is zealous of another woman. Her tongue-lashing makes it known to all. 7 A wicked woman is as a yoke of oxen shaken back and forth. He who takes hold of her is as one who grasps a scorpion. 8 A drunken woman causes great wrath; she will not cover her own shame. 9 The whoredom of a woman is in the lifting up of her eyes; it will be known by her eyelids. 10 Keep strict watch on a headstrong daughter, lest she find liberty for herself, and use it. 11 Look well after an impudent eye; and don’t be surprised if it sins against you. 12 She will open her mouth like a thirsty traveler, and drink from every water that is near. She will sit down at every post, and open her quiver to any arrow. 13 The grace of a woman will delight her husband; And her knowledge will fatten his bones. 14 A silent woman is a gift of the Lord. There is nothing worth so much as a well-instructed soul. 15 A modest woman is grace upon grace. There are no scales that can weigh the value of a self-controlled soul. 16 As the sun when it arises in the highest places of the Lord, so is the beauty of a good woman in her well-organized home. 17 As the lamp that shines upon the holy candlestick, so is the beauty of the face on a well-proportioned body. 18 As the golden pillars are upon a base of silver, so are beautiful feet with the breasts of one who is steadfast.

Genesis 3:16 (T)
3:16 To the woman he said, “I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth. You will bear children in pain. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
Exodus 32:15-20 (T)
32:15 Moses turned, and went down from the mountain, with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand; tablets that were written on both their sides. They were written on one side and on the other. 16 The tablets were the work of Elohim, and the writing was the writing of Elohim, engraved on the tablets. 17 When Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is the noise of war in the camp.” 18 He said, “It is not a voice in answer of bravery, and it is not a voice in answer of defeat, it is a voice in answer [of wine](LXX) that I am hearing.” 19 As soon as he came near to the camp, he saw the calf and the dancing. Then Moses’ anger grew hot, and he threw the tablets out of his hands, and broke them beneath the mountain. 20 He took the calf which they had made, and burned it with fire, ground it to powder, and scattered it on the water, and made the sons of Israel drink it.
Numbers 12:9-15 (T)
12:9 YHWH’s anger burned against them; and he departed. 10 The cloud departed from over the Tent; and behold, Miriam was infected, as white as snow. Aaron looked at Miriam, and behold, she was infected. 11 Aaron said to Moses, “Oh, my lord, please don’t count this sin against us, in which we have done foolishly, and in which we have sinned. 12 Let her not be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half consumed when he comes out of his mother’s womb.” 13 Moses cried to YHWH, saying, “Heal her, Elohim, I beg you!” 14 YHWH said to Moses, “If her father had but spit in her face, shouldn’t she be ashamed seven days? Let her be shut up outside of the camp seven days, and after that she will be brought in again.” 15 Miriam was shut up outside of the camp seven days, and the people didn’t travel until Miriam was brought in again.
1 Corinthians 11:1-6 (T)
11:1 Be imitators of me, even as I also am of Messiah. 2 Now I praise you, that you remember me in all things, and hold firm the traditions, even as I delivered them to you. 3 But I would have you know that the head of every man is Messiah, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Messiah is Elohim. 4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head. 5 But every woman praying or prophesying with her head uncovered dishonors her head. For it is one and the same thing as if she were shaved. 6 For if a woman is not covered, let her hair also be cut off. But if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut off or be shaved, let her be covered.
1 Timothy 2:8-15 (T)
2:8 I desire therefore that the men in every place pray, lifting up holy hands without anger and doubting. 9 In the same way, that women also adorn themselves in decent clothing, with modesty and propriety, not with braided hair, gold, pearls, or expensive clothing, 10 but with good works, which is appropriate for women professing godliness. 11 Let a woman learn in quietness with full submission. 12 But I don’t permit a woman to teach, nor to exercise authority over a man, but to be in quietness. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Chavah. 14 Adam wasn’t deceived, but the woman, being deceived, has fallen into disobedience; 15 but she will be saved through her childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, and sanctification with sobriety.
Genesis 2:24 (A)
2:21 YHWH Elohim caused the man to fall into a trance. As the man slept, he took one from his side, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 YHWH Elohim made a woman from the side which he had taken from the man which he had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from Man.” 24 Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh.
1 Corinthians 6:15-20 (A, T)
6:15 Don’t you know that your bodies are members of Messiah? Shall I then take the members of Messiah and make them members of a whore (G4204)? May it never be! 16 Or don’t you know that he who is joined to a whore (G4204) is one body? For, “The two”, he says, “will become one flesh.” 17 But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit. 18 Flee fornication (G4202)! “Every sin that a man does is outside the body,” but he who commits fornication (G4203) sins against his own body. 19 Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from Elohim? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify Elohim in your body and in your spirit, which are Elohim’s.
Proverbs 2:10-19 (T)
2:10 For wisdom will enter into your heart. Knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. 11 Discretion will watch over you. Understanding will keep you, 12 to deliver you from the way of evil, from the men who speak perverse things, 13 who forsake the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness, 14 who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the perverseness of evil, 15 who are crooked in their ways, and wayward in their paths, 16 to deliver you from the strange woman, even from the foreigner who flatters with her words, 17 who forsakes the friend of her youth, and forgets the covenant of her Elohim; 18 for her house leads down to death, her paths to the departed spirits. 19 None who go to her return again, neither do they attain to the paths of life.
Leviticus 15:16-18 (T)
15:16 If any man has a seed of copulation go out from him, then he will bathe all his flesh in water, and be unclean until the evening. 17 Every garment and every skin which the seed of copulation is on will be washed with water, and be unclean until the evening. 18 If a man lies with a woman and there is a seed of copulation, they will both bathe themselves in water, and be unclean until the evening.
Leviticus 18:20 (T)
18:20 Do not give copulation for seed to your fellow’s wife, and be unclean with her.
Leviticus 20:10 (T)
20:10 The man who commits adultery with a man’s wife, even he who commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress will surely be put to death.
Proverbs 7:5-27 (T)
7:5 that they may keep you from the strange woman, from the foreigner who flatters with her words. 6 For at the window of my house, I looked out through my lattice. 7 I saw among the simple ones. I discerned among the youths a young man void of understanding, 8 passing through the street near her corner, he went the way to her house, 9 in the twilight, in the evening of the day, in the middle of the night and in the darkness. 10 Behold, there a woman met him with the attire of a prostitute, and with crafty intent. 11 She is loud and defiant. Her feet don’t stay in her house. 12 Now she is in the streets, now in the squares, and lurking at every corner. 13 So she caught him, and kissed him. With an impudent face she said to him: 14 “slaughters of peace offerings are with me. Today I have paid my vows. 15 Therefore I came out to meet you, to diligently seek your face, and I have found you. 16 I have spread my couch with carpets of tapestry, with striped cloths of the yarn of Egypt. 17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. 18 Come, let us take our fill of loving until the morning. Let’s solace ourselves with loving. 19 For my husband isn’t at home. He has gone on a long journey. 20 He has taken a bag of money with him. He will come home at the full moon.” 21 With persuasive words, she led him astray. With the flattering of her lips, she seduced him. 22 He followed her immediately, as an ox goes to the slaughter, as a fool stepping into a noose. 23 Until an arrow strikes through his liver, as a bird hurries to the snare, and doesn’t know that it will cost his life. 24 Now therefore, sons, listen to me. Pay attention to the words of my mouth. 25 Don’t let your heart turn to her ways. Don’t go astray in her paths, 26 for she has thrown down many wounded. Yes, all her slain are a mighty army. 27 Her house is the way to Sheol, going down to the rooms of death.
Proverbs 30:20 (T)
30:20 “So is the way of an adulterous woman: She eats and wipes her mouth, and says, ‘I have done nothing wrong.’
Proverbs 6:32-35 (T)
6:32 He who commits adultery with a woman is void of understanding. He who does it destroys his own soul. 33 He will get wounds and dishonor. His reproach will not be wiped away. 34 For zeal arouses the fury of the husband. He won’t spare in the day of vengeance. 35 He won’t regard any ransom, neither will he rest content, though you give many gifts.
Song of Songs 8:6 (T)
8:6 Set me as a seal on your heart, as a seal on your arm; for love is strong as death. Jealousy is as cruel as Sheol. Its flashes are flashes of fire, a very flame of YHWH.
Zephaniah 3:7 (T)
3:7 I said, “Just fear me. Receive correction,” so that her dwelling won’t be cut off, according to all that I have appointed concerning her. But they rose early and corrupted all their doings.
Leviticus 5:11 (T)
5:11 But if he can’t afford two turtledoves or two sons of a dove, then he will bring as his offering for that in which he has sinned, one tenth of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering. He will put no oil on it, and he will not put any frankincense on it, for it is a sin offering.
Hosea 3:1-3 (T)
3:1 YHWH said to me, “Go again, love a woman loved by another, and an adulteress, even as YHWH loves the sons of Israel, though they turn to other elohim, and love cakes of raisins.” 2 So I bought her for myself for fifteen pieces of silver and a homer and a half of barley. 3 I said to her, “You will stay with me many days. You will not whore, and you will not be with any other man. I will also be so toward you.”
1 Kings 17:10-18 (T)
17:10 So he arose and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and said, “Please get me a little water in a jar, that I may drink.” 11 As she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.” 12 She said, “As YHWH your Elohim lives, I don’t have anything baked, but only a handful of meal in a jar and a little oil in a jar. Behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and bake it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.” 13 Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go and do as you have said; but make me a little cake from it first, and bring it out to me, and afterward make some for you and for your son. 14 For YHWH, the Elohim of Israel, says, ‘The jar of meal will not run out, and the jar of oil will not fail, until the day that YHWH sends rain on the land.’ ” 15 She went and did according to the saying of Elijah; and she, he, and her household ate many days. 16 The jar of meal didn’t run out and the jar of oil didn’t fail, according to the word of YHWH, which he spoke by Elijah. 17 After these things, the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became sick; and his sickness was so severe that there was no breath left in him. 18 She said to Elijah, “What have I to do with you, you man of Elohim? You have come to me to bring my sin to memory, and to kill my son!”
Ezekiel 29:13-16 (T)
29:13 For the Lord YHWH says: “At the end of forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the peoples where they were scattered. 14 I will reverse the captivity of Egypt, and will cause them to return into the land of Pathros, into the land of their birth. There they will be a lowly reign. 15 It will be the lowest of the reigns. It won’t lift itself up above the nations any more. I will diminish them so that they will no longer rule over the nations. 16 It will no longer be the confidence of the house of Israel, bringing iniquity to memory, when they turn to look after them. Then they will know that I am the Lord YHWH.” ‘ ”
Hebrews 13:4 (T)
13:4 The marriage honored in all, and the marriage-bed undefiled; but Elohim will judge the fornicators and adulterers.

Sirach 23:16-28 (T)
23:16 Two sorts of people multiply sins, and the third will bring wrath: a hot mind, as a burning fire, will not be quenched until it is consumed; a fornicator in the body of his flesh will never cease until he has burned out the fire. 17 All bread is sweet to a fornicator. He will not cease until he dies. 18 A man who goes astray from his own bed, says in his heart, “Who sees me? Darkness is around me, and the walls hide me. No one sees me. Of whom am I afraid? The Most High will not remember my sins.” 19 The eyes of men are his terror. He doesn’t know that the eyes of the Lord are ten thousand times brighter than the sun, seeing all the ways of men, and looking into secret places. 20 All things were known to him before they were created, and in also after they were completed. 21 This man will be punished in the streets of the city. He will be seized where he least expects it. 22 So also is a woman who leaves her husband, and brings in an heir by a stranger. 23 For first, she was disobedient in the Torah of the Most High. Second, she trespassed against her own husband. Third, she played the adulteress in whoredom, and brought in children by a stranger. 24 She will be brought out into the congregation. Her punishment will extend to her children. 25 Her children will not take root. Her branches will bear no fruit. 26 She will leave her memory for a curse. Her reproach won’t be blotted out. 27 And those who are left behind will know that there is nothing better than the fear of the Lord, and nothing sweeter than to heed the commandments of the Lord.
Sirach 25:13-26 (T)
25:13 Any plague but a plague of the heart! Any wickedness but the wickedness of a woman! 14 Any calamity, but a calamity from those who hate me! Any vengeance, but the vengeance of enemies! 15 There is no head above the head of a nachash. There is no wrath above the wrath of an enemy. 16 I would rather dwell with a lion and a dragon than keep house with a wicked woman. 17 The wickedness of a woman changes her appearance, and darkens her countenance like that of a bear. 18 Her husband will sit among his neighbors, and when he hears it, he sighs bitterly. 19 All malice is small compared to the malice of a woman. Let the portion of a sinner fall on her. 20 As walking up a sandy way is to the feet of the aged, so is a woman full of words to a quiet man. 21 Don’t throw yourself upon the beauty of a woman. Don’t desire a woman for her beauty. 22 There is anger, impudence, and great reproach if a woman supports her husband. 23 A wicked woman is abasement of heart, sadness of countenance, and a wounded heart. A woman who won’t make her husband happy is like hands that hang down, and palsied knees. 24 The beginning of sin came from a woman. Because of her, we all die. 25 Don’t give water an outlet, and don’t give a wicked woman freedom of speech. 26 If she doesn’t go as you direct, cut her off from your flesh.
Sirach 40:19-23 (T)
40:19 Children and the building of a city establish a man’s name; And a blameless woman is counted above both. 20 Wine and music rejoice the heart; And the love of wisdom is above both. 21 The pipe and the lute make pleasant melody; And a pleasant tongue is above both. 22 Your eye will desire grace and beauty; And above both the green blade of corn. 23 A friend and a companion never meet amiss; And a woman with her husband is above both.
Sirach 41:16-24 (T)
41:16 Wherefore show reverence to my word: For it is not good to retain every kind of shame; And not all things are approved by all in good faith. 17 Be ashamed of whoredom before father and mother: And of a lie before a prince and a mighty man; 18 Of an offense before a judge and ruler; Of iniquity before the congregation and the people; Of unjust dealing before a partner and friend; 19 And of theft in regard of the place where you sojourn, And in regard of the truth of Elohim and his covenant; And of leaning with your elbow at meat; And of scurrility in the matter of giving and taking; 20 And of silence before those who salute you; And of looking upon a woman that is a prostitute; 21 And of turning away the face from a kinsman; Of taking away a portion or a gift; And of gazing upon a woman that has a husband; 22 Of being over busy with his maid; and come not near her bed; Of upbraiding speeches before friends; And after you have given, upbraid not; 23 Of repeating and speaking what you have heard; And of revealing of secrets. 24 So will you be truly shamefast, And find favor in the sight of every man.

42:6 Where there is an evil woman, a seal is a good thing; and where there are many hands, lock things up. 7 Whatsoever you hand over, let it be by number and weight; And in giving and receiving let all be in writing. 8 Be not ashamed to instruct the unwise and foolish, And one of extreme old age that contends with those that are young; And so will you be well instructed indeed, And approved in the sight of every man living. 9 A daughter is a secret cause of wakefulness to a father; And the care for her puts away sleep; In her youth, lest she pass the flower of her age; And when she is married, lest she should be hated: 10 In her virginity, lest she should be defiled And be with child in her father’s house; And when she has a husband, lest she should transgress; And when she is married, lest she should be barren. 11 Keep a strict watch over a headstrong daughter, Lest she make you a laughing stock to your enemies, A byword in the city and notorious among the people, And shame you before the multitude. [Make sure that her room has no windows or any place where she can look out to the entrance of the house.] 12 Look not upon every body in regard of beauty, And sit not in the midst of women; 13 For from garments comes a moth, And from a woman a woman’s wickedness. 14 Better is the wickedness of a man than a pleasant-dealing woman, And a woman which puts you to shameful reproach.
Numbers 5:11-31 from the Jerusalem Targum aka Targum Pseudo-Jonathan (T)
Composed in Talmudic Israel (c.150 – c.250 AD). Targum Pseudo-Jonathan is a western targum (translation) of the Torah (Pentateuch) from the land of Israel (as opposed to the eastern Babylonian Targum Onkelos). Its correct title was originally Targum Yerushalmi (Jerusalem Targum), which is how it was known in medieval times. But because of a printer’s mistake it was later labeled Targum Jonathan, in reference to Jonathan ben Uzziel. Some editions of the Pentateuch continue to call it Targum Jonathan to this day. Most scholars refer to the text as Targum Pseudo-Jonathan. This targum is more than a mere translation. It includes much Aggadic material collected from various sources as late as the Midrash Rabbah as well as earlier material from the Talmud. It is effectively a combination of a commentary and a translation. In the portions where it is pure translation, it often agrees with the Targum Onkelos. The date of its composition is disputed. It cannot have been completed before the Arabic conquest as it refers to Mohammad’s wife Fatimah, but might have been initially composed in the 4th Century AD. However, some scholars date it in the 14th Century.
Chapter 5 …And the Lord spake with Mosheh, saying: Speak with the sons of Israel, and say to them: If the woman of any man go astray and commit wrongness against him, and another man lie with her, and it be hidden from her husband’s eyes, and be concealed, and she be contaminated: or, if the testimony be not clear which is witnessed against her, and she be not convicted; or, if the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, that she hath been defiled, or the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, though she hath not been defiled; and though that man may have not brought separation or tythe, there is constraint upon him to bring his wife unto the priest. Now, because she may have brought delicacies to the adulterer, she ought to bring an appointed oblation of her own, a tenth of three sata of barley flour, that being the food of beasts: he will not pour oil, nor put frankincense thereon; for it is a mincha (on account) of jealousy, a mincha of a memorial which calleth guilt to mind.
And the priest will bring her near, and cause her to stand before the Lord.
And the priest will take holy water from the laver with an ewer, and pour it into an vessel of clay; because she may have brought the adulterer sweet wine to drink in precious vases; and he will take of the dust that is upon the ground of the tabernacle,-because the end of all flesh is dust,- and put it into the water. And the priest will cause the woman to stand before the Lord, and bind a cord over her loins and upon her breast,- because she should have bound her loins with a girdle; and he will uncover the woman’s head, because she had tied a fillet upon her hair.
And he will put the mincha of memorial, the mincha of jealousy, into her hand; while in the hand of the priest will be the bitter water of the trial.
And the priest will adjure her by the adjuration of the Great and Glorious Name, and will say to the woman:
If thou hast not turned aside, to defile thyself by acting against the right of thy husband, be thou unhurt by these bitter waters of trial. [JERUSALEM. Be thou made innocent by these waters of trial by their probation.] But if thou hast turned aside against the right of thy husband, and art defiled in having shared the bed with a man against thy husband’s right:-Then will the priest adjure the woman by the oath of malediction, and say to the woman,-The Lord make thee a curse and an execration among the children of thy people, in causing thy thigh to corrupt, and thy belly to swell;. and may these waters of trial enter into thy bowels, to cause thy belly to swell, and thy thigh to corrupt.
And the woman will answer and say: Amen, if I was polluted when betrothed; Amen, if I have been polluted since my marriage. [JERUSALEM. And the woman will answer, Amen, because I have not been unclean; Amen, if ever I will have wrought uncleanness.]
And the priest will write these maledictions upon a parchment, and wash it out with the water of trial, and cause the woman to drink the bitter trial water: the trial water of malediction will be received by her. But the priest will (first) take from the woman’s hand the mincha of jealousy, and uplift the mincha before the Lord, and lay it on the side of the altar. And the priest will take a handful of the portion for its memorial, and burn it at the altar; and after that the woman will drink the water.
And when he hath caused her to drink the water, it will be that if she hath been defiled by adultery, and hath acted with wrongness against her husband, those proving waters will enter into her with a curse, and her belly will swell, and her thigh become corrupt, and the woman will be an execration among the children of her people. The adulterer as well will be detected by these waters of probation, in whatever place he may be. But if the woman hath not been defiled by adultery, but is innocent, they will enter without harm, and her brightness will shine forth, and she will find affection before her husband, and become the mother of a son.
This is the declaration of the law of jealousy, when a woman hath fallen away from the right of her husband, and become defiled by adultery; or when the spirit of jealousy cometh upon a man, that he be so jealous of his wife as to make her stand before the Lord, then will the priest perform all this law. But if the man be innocent of transgressions, then let that woman bear her iniquity.
