Bereshiyth (Genesis) Chapter 1
1 בראשׁית ברא אלהים את השׁמים ואת הארץ׃
1 bareshiyt bara elohiym et hashamayim waet haarets:
1 In the beginning, Elohiym created the heavens and the land.
2 והארץ היתה תהו ובהו וחשׁך על־פני תהום ורוח אלהים מרחפת על־פני המים׃
2 wahaarets hayatah tohu wavohu wachoshekh ‘al paney tahom waruach elohiym marachefet ‘al paney hamayim:
2 The land was formless and empty. Darkness was on the face of the deep and the (wind) of Elohiym was (fluttering) over the face of the waters.
3 ויאמר אלהים יהי אור ויהי־אור׃
3 wayomer elohiym yahiy or wayahiy or:
3 Elohiym said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
4 וירא אלהים את־האור כי־טוב ויבדל אלהים בין האור ובין החשׁך׃
4 wayara elohiym et haor kiy thov wayavadel elohiym beyn haor uveyn hachoshekh:
4 Elohiym saw the light, and saw that it was (functional). Elohiym divided the light from the darkness.
5 ויקרא אלהים לאור יום ולחשׁך קרא לילה ויהי־ערב ויהי־בקר יום אחד׃
5 wayiqara elohiym laor yom walachoshekh qara layalah wayahiy ‘erev wayahiy voqer yom echad:
5 Elohiym called the light “day‡time‡”, and the darkness he called “night”. There was evening and there was morning, the first day.
6 ויאמר אלהים יהי רקיע בתוך המים ויהי מבדיל בין מים למים׃
6 wayomer elohiym yahiy raqiy’a batokh hamayim wiyhiy mavadiyl beyn mayim lamayim:
6 Elohiym said, “Let there be a (sheet) in the middle of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.”
7 ויעשׂ אלהים את־הרקיע ויבדל בין המים אשׁר מתחת לרקיע ובין המים אשׁר מעל לרקיע ויהי־כן׃
7 waya’as elohiym et haraqiy’a wayavadel beyn hamayim asher mitachat laraqiy’a uveyn hamayim asher me’al laraqiy’a wayahiy khen:
7 Elohiym made the (sheet), and divided the waters which were under the (sheet) from the waters which were above the (sheet); and it was so.
8 ויקרא אלהים לרקיע שׁמים ויהי־ערב ויהי־בקר יום שׁני׃
8 wayiqara elohiym laraqiy’a shamayim wayahiy ‘erev wayahiy voqer yom sheniy:
8 Elohiym called the (sheet) “the heavens”. There was evening and there was morning, a second day.
9 ויאמר אלהים יקוו המים מתחת השׁמים אל־מקום אחד ותראה היבשׁה ויהי־כן׃
9 wayomer elohiym yiqawu hamayim mitachat hashamayim el maqom echad wateraeh hayabashah wayahiy khen:
9 Elohiym said, “Let the waters under‡neath‡ the heavens be gathered together to one ‡gathering‡, and let the dry ground appear;” and it was so. ‡And the waters under the heavens gathered to their gatherings and the dry ground appeared‡
10 ויקרא אלהים ליבשׁה ארץ ולמקוה המים קרא ימים וירא אלהים כי־טוב׃
10 wayiqara elohiym layabashah erets ulamiqaweh hamayim qara yamiym wayara elohiym kiy thov:
10 Elohiym called the dry ground “land”, and the gathering together of the waters he called “seas”. Elohiym saw that it was (functional).
11 ויאמר אלהים תדשׁא הארץ דשׁא עשׂב מזריע זרע עץ פרי עשׂה פרי למינו אשׁר זרעו־בו על־הארץ ויהי־כן׃
11 wayomer elohiym tadashe haarets deshe ‘esev mazariy’a zera’ ‘ets pariy ‘oseh pariy lamiyno asher zara’o vo ‘al haarets wayahiy khen:
11 Elohiym said, “Let the land yield grass, herbs yielding seeds, and fruit trees bearing fruit after their kind, with their seeds in it, on the land;” and it was so.
12 ותוצא הארץ דשׁא עשׂב מזריע זרע למינהו ועץ עשׂה־פרי אשׁר זרעו־בו למינהו וירא אלהים כי־טוב׃
12 watotse haarets deshe ‘esev mazariy’a zera’ lamiynehu wa’ets ‘oseh pariy asher zara’o vo lamiynehu wayara elohiym kiy thov:
12 The land yielded grass, herbs yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit, with their seeds in it, after their kind; and Elohiym saw that it was (functional).
13 ויהי־ערב ויהי־בקר יום שׁלישׁי׃
13 wayahiy ‘erev wayahiy voqer yom shaliyshiy:
13 There was evening and there was morning, a third day.
14 ויאמר אלהים יהי מארת ברקיע השׁמים להבדיל בין היום ובין הלילה והיו לאתת ולמועדים ולימים ושׁנים׃
14 wayomer elohiym yahiy maorot biraqiy’a hashamayim lahavadiyl beyn hayom uveyn halayalah wahayu laotot ulamo’adiym ulayamiym washaniym:
14 Elohiym said, “Let there be lights in the (sheet) of the heavens to {light the land and separate} the day from the night; and ‡they were‡ for signs to mark appointed times, days, and ‡for‡ years;
15 והיו למאורת ברקיע השׁמים להאיר על־הארץ ויהי־כן׃
15 wahayu limaorot biraqiy’a hashamayim lahaiyr ‘al haarets wayahiy khen:
15 and let them be for lights in the (sheet) of the heavens to give light on the land;” and it was so.
16 ויעשׂ אלהים את־שׁני המארת הגדלים את־המאור הגדל לממשׁלת היום ואת־המאור הקטן לממשׁלת הלילה ואת הכוכבים׃
16 waya’as elohiym et shaney hamaorot hagadoliym et hamaor hagadol lamemashelet hayom waet hamaor haqathon lamemashelet halayalah waet hakokhaviym:
16 Elohiym made the two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He also made the stars.
17 ויתן אתם אלהים ברקיע השׁמים להאיר על־הארץ׃
17 wayiten otam elohiym biraqiy’a hashamayim lahaiyr ‘al haarets:
17 Elohiym set them in the (sheet) of the heavens to give light to the land,
18 ולמשׁל ביום ובלילה ולהבדיל בין האור ובין החשׁך וירא אלהים כי־טוב׃
18 walimashol bayom uvalayalah ulahavadiyl beyn haor uveyn hachoshekh wayara elohiym kiy thov:
18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. Elohiym saw that it was (functional).
19 ויהי־ערב ויהי־בקר יום רביעי׃
19 wayahiy ‘erev wayahiy voqer yom raviy’iy:
19 There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.
20 ויאמר אלהים ישׁרצו המים שׁרץ נפשׁ חיה ועוף יעופף על־הארץ על־פני רקיע השׁמים׃
20 wayomer elohiym yisharatsu hamayim sherets nefesh chayah wa’of ya’ofef ‘al haarets ‘al paney raqiy’a hashamayim:
20 Elohiym said, “Let the waters abound with living [reptiles], and let birds fly above the land in the open (sheet) of the heavens.”
21 ויברא אלהים את־התנינם הגדלים ואת כל־נפשׁ החיה הרמשׂת אשׁר שׁרצו המים למינהם ואת כל־עוף כנף למינהו וירא אלהים כי־טוב׃
21 wayivara elohiym et hataniynim hagadoliym waet kal nefesh hachayah haromeset asher sharatsu hamayim lamiynehem waet kal ‘of kanaf lamiynehu wayara elohiym kiy thov:
21 Elohiym created the large {crocodiles} and every living [reptile] that moves, with which the waters swarmed, after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind. Elohiym saw that it was (functional).
22 ויברך אתם אלהים לאמר פרו ורבו ומלאו את־המים בימים והעוף ירב בארץ׃
22 wayavarekh otam elohiym lemor paru uravu umilau et hamayim bayamiym waha’of yirev baarets:
22 Elohiym blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and ‡the birds shall‡ multiply on the land.”
23 ויהי־ערב ויהי־בקר יום חמישׁי׃
23 wayahiy ‘erev wayahiy voqer yom chamiyshiy:
23 There was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.
24 ויאמר אלהים תוצא הארץ נפשׁ חיה למינה בהמה ורמשׂ וחיתו־ארץ למינה ויהי־כן׃
24 wayomer elohiym totse haarets nefesh chayah lamiynah bahemah waremes wachayato erets lamiynah wayahiy khen:
24 Elohiym said, “Let the land produce living creatures after their kind, livestock, [quadrupeds and reptiles], and [wild beasts] of the land after their kind;” and it was so.
25 ויעשׂ אלהים את־חית הארץ למינה ואת־הבהמה למינה ואת כל־רמשׂ האדמה למינהו וירא אלהים כי־טוב׃
25 waya’as elohiym et chayat haarets lamiynah waet habahemah lamiynah waet kal remes haadamah lamiynehu wayara elohiym kiy thov:
25 Elohiym made the [wild beasts] of the land after their kind, and the livestock after their kind, and [all the reptiles] on the ground after its kind. Elohiym saw that it was (functional).
26 ויאמר אלהים נעשׂה אדם בצלמנו כדמותנו וירדו בדגת הים ובעוף השׁמים ובבהמה ובכל־הארץ ובכל־הרמשׂ הרמשׂ על־הארץ׃
26 wayomer elohiym na’aseh adam batsalamenu kidamutenu wayiradu vidagat hayam uva’of hashamayim uvabahemah uvakhal haarets uvakhal haremes haromes ‘al haarets:
26 Elohiym said, “Let us make man in our image, {and according to our form}. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the livestock, and over all the land, and over [all the reptiles that creep] on the land.”
27 ויברא אלהים את־האדם בצלמו בצלם אלהים ברא אתו זכר ונקבה ברא אתם׃
27 wayivara elohiym et haadam batsalamo batselem elohiym bara oto zakhar unaqevah bara otam:
27 Elohiym created man in his own image. In the image of Elohiym he created him; male and female he created them.
28 ויברך אתם אלהים ויאמר להם אלהים פרו ורבו ומלאו את־הארץ וכבשׁה ורדו בדגת הים ובעוף השׁמים ובכל־חיה הרמשׂת על־הארץ׃
28 wayavarekh otam elohiym wayomer lahem elohiym paru uravu umilau et haarets wakhivashuha uradu bidagat hayam uva’of hashamayim uvakhal chayah haromeset ‘al haarets:
28 Elohiym blessed them. Elohiym said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the land, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the heavens, and over {the living of every} thing that moves on the land.”
29 ויאמר אלהים הנה נתתי לכם את־כל־עשׂב זרע זרע אשׁר על־פני כל־הארץ ואת־כל־העץ אשׁר־בו פרי־עץ זרע זרע לכם יהיה לאכלה׃
29 wayomer elohiym hineh natatiy lakhem et kal ‘esev zore’a zera’ asher ‘al paney khal haarets waet kal ha’ets asher bo fariy ‘ets zore’a zara’ lakhem yihayeh laakhalah:
29 Elohiym said, “Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is on the face of all the land, and every tree, which bears fruit yielding seed. It will be your food.
30 ולכל־חית הארץ ולכל־עוף השׁמים ולכל רומשׂ על־הארץ אשׁר־בו נפשׁ חיה את־כל־ירק עשׂב לאכלה ויהי־כן׃
30 ulakhal chayat haarets ulakhal ‘of hashamayim ulakhol romes ‘al haarets asher bo nefesh chayah et kal yereq ‘esev laakhalah wayahiy khen:
30 To every [wild beast] of the land, and to every bird of the heavens, and to every [reptile] that {moves} on the land, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food;” and it was so.
31 וירא אלהים את־כל־אשׁר עשׂה והנה־טוב מאד ויהי־ערב ויהי־בקר יום השׁשׁי׃
31 wayara elohiym et kal asher ‘asah wahineh thov maod wayahiy ‘erev wayahiy voqer yom hashishiy:
31 Elohiym saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very (functional). There was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.
