Bereshiyth (Genesis) Chapter 2
1 ויכלו השׁמים והארץ וכל־צבאם׃
1 wayakhulu hashamayim wahaarets wakhal tsavaam:
1 The heavens, the land, and all their vast array were finished.
2 ויכל אלהים ביום השׁביעי מלאכתו אשׁר עשׂה וישׁבת ביום השׁביעי מכל־מלאכתו אשׁר עשׂה׃
2 wayakhal elohiym bayom hashaviy’iy malakhato asher ‘asah wayishabot bayom hashaviy’iy mikal malakhato asher ‘asah:
2 On the seventh day Elohiym finished his work which he had done; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done.
3 ויברך אלהים את־יום השׁביעי ויקדשׁ אתו כי בו שׁבת מכל־מלאכתו אשׁר־ברא אלהים לעשׂות׃
3 wayavarekh elohiym et yom hashaviy’iy wayaqadesh oto kiy vo shavat mikal malakhato asher bara elohiym la’asot:
3 Elohiym blessed the seventh day, and made it holy, because he rested in it from all his work of creation which he had done.
4 אלה תולדות השׁמים והארץ בהבראם ביום עשׂות יהוה אלהים ארץ ושׁמים׃
4 eleh toladot hashamayim wahaarets bahibaraam bayom ‘asot YHWH elohiym erets washamayim:
4 This is the history of the generations of the heavens and of the land when they were created, in the day that יהוה Elohiym made the land and the heavens.
5 וכל שׂיח השׂדה טרם יהיה בארץ וכל־עשׂב השׂדה טרם יצמח כי לא המטיר יהוה אלהים על־הארץ ואדם אין לעבד את־האדמה׃
5 wakhol siyach hasadeh therem yihayeh vaarets wakhal ‘esev hasadeh therem yitsamach kiy lo himathiyr YHWH elohiym ‘al haarets waadam ayin la’avod et haadamah:
5 No plant of the field was yet in the land, and no herb of the field had yet sprung up; for יהוה Elohiym had not caused it to rain on the land. There was not a man to till the ground,
6 ואד יעלה מן־הארץ והשׁקה את־כל־פני־האדמה׃
6 waed ya’aleh min haarets wahishaqah et kal paney haadamah:
6 but a mist went up from the land, and watered the whole surface of the ground.
7 וייצר יהוה אלהים את־האדם עפר מן־האדמה ויפח באפיו נשׁמת חיים ויהי האדם לנפשׁ חיה׃
7 wayiytser YHWH elohiym et haadam ‘afar min haadamah wayipach baapayw nishamat chayiym wayahiy haadam lanefesh chayah:
7 יהוה Elohiym formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of lives; and man became a living soul.
8 ויטע יהוה אלהים גן־בעדן מקדם וישׂם שׁם את־האדם אשׁר יצר׃
8 wayitha’ YHWH elohiym gan ba’eden miqedem wayasem sham et haadam asher yatsar:
8 יהוה Elohiym planted a garden eastward, in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed.
9 ויצמח יהוה אלהים מן־האדמה כל־עץ נחמד למראה וטוב למאכל ועץ החיים בתוך הגן ועץ הדעת טוב ורע׃
9 wayatsamach YHWH elohiym min haadamah kal ‘ets nechamad lamaraeh wathov lamaakhal wa’ets hachayiym batokh hagan wa’ets hada’at thov wara’:
9 Out of the ground יהוה Elohiym made every tree to grow that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food, including the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 ונהר יצא מעדן להשׁקות את־הגן ומשׁם יפרד והיה לארבעה ראשׁים׃
10 wanahar yotse me’eden lahashaqot et hagan umisham yipared wahayah laaraba’ah rashiym:
10 A river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it was parted, and became the source of four rivers.
11 שׁם האחד פישׁון הוא הסבב את כל־ארץ החוילה אשׁר־שׁם הזהב׃
11 shem haechad piyshon hu hasovev et kal erets hachawiylah asher sham hazahav:
11 The name of the first is Pishon: it flows through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;
12 וזהב הארץ ההוא טוב שׁם הבדלח ואבן השׁהם׃
12 uzahav haarets hahiw thov sham habadolach waeven hashoham:
12 and the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and onyx stone are also there.
13 ושׁם־הנהר השׁני גיחון הוא הסובב את כל־ארץ כושׁ׃
13 washem hanahar hasheniy giychon hu hasovev et kal erets kush:
13 The name of the second river is Gihon. It is the same river that flows through the whole land of Cush.
14 ושׁם הנהר השׁלישׁי חדקל הוא ההלך קדמת אשׁור והנהר הרביעי הוא פרת׃
14 washem hanahar hashaliyshiy chideqel hu haholekh qidamat ashur wahanahar haraviy’iy hu farat:
14 The name of the third river is Hiddekel. This is the one which flows in front of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.
15 ויקח יהוה אלהים את־האדם וינחהו בגן־עדן לעבדה ולשׁמרה׃
15 wayiqach YHWH elohiym et haadam wayanichehu vagan ‘eden la’avadah ulashamarah:
15 יהוה Elohiym took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.
16 ויצו יהוה אלהים על־האדם לאמר מכל עץ־הגן אכל תאכל׃
16 wayatsaw YHWH elohiym ‘al haadam lemor mikol ‘ets hagan akhol tokhel:
16 יהוה Elohiym commanded the man, saying, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden;
17 ומעץ הדעת טוב ורע לא תאכל ממנו כי ביום אכלך ממנו מות תמות׃
17 ume’ets hada’at thov wara’ lo tokhal mimenu kiy bayom akhalakha mimenu mot tamut:
17 but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”
18 ויאמר יהוה אלהים לא־טוב היות האדם לבדו אעשׂה־לו עזר כנגדו׃
18 wayomer YHWH elohiym lo thov heyot haadam lavado e’eseh lo ‘ezer kanegado:
18 יהוה Elohiym said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper comparable to him.”
19 ויצר יהוה אלהים מן־האדמה כל־חית השׂדה ואת כל־עוף השׁמים ויבא אל־האדם לראות מה־יקרא־לו וכל אשׁר יקרא־לו האדם נפשׁ חיה הוא שׁמו׃
19 wayitser YHWH elohiym min haadamah kal chayat hasadeh waet kal ‘of hashamayim wayave el haadam liraot mah yiqara lo wakhol asher yiqara lo haadam nefesh chayah hu shamo:
19 Out of the ground יהוה Elohiym formed every beast of the field, and every bird of the heavens, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called every living creature became its name.
20 ויקרא האדם שׁמות לכל־הבהמה ולעוף השׁמים ולכל חית השׂדה ולאדם לא־מצא עזר כנגדו׃
20 wayiqara haadam shemot lakhal habahemah ula’of hashamayim ulakhol chayat hasadeh ulaadam lo matsa ‘ezer kanegado:
20 The man gave names to all livestock, and to the birds of the heavens, and to every beast of the field; but for man there was not found a helper comparable to him.
21 ויפל יהוה אלהים תרדמה על־האדם ויישׁן ויקח אחת מצלעתיו ויסגר בשׂר תחתנה׃
21 wayapel YHWH elohiym tarademah ‘al haadam wayiyshan wayiqach achat mitsala’otayw wayisagor basar tachatenah:
21 יהוה Elohiym caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. As the man slept, he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.
22 ויבן יהוה אלהים את־הצלע אשׁר־לקח מן־האדם לאשׁה ויבאה אל־האדם׃
22 wayiven YHWH elohiym et hatsela’ asher laqach min haadam laishah wayavieha el haadam:
22 יהוה Elohiym made a woman from the rib which he had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.
23 ויאמר האדם זאת הפעם עצם מעצמי ובשׂר מבשׂרי לזאת יקרא אשׁה כי מאישׁ לקחה־זאת׃
23 wayomer haadam zot hapa’am ‘etsem me’atsamay uvasar mibasariy lazot yiqare ishah kiy meiysh luqachah zot:
23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from Man.”
24 על־כן יעזב־אישׁ את־אביו ואת־אמו ודבק באשׁתו והיו לבשׂר אחד׃
24 ‘al ken ya’azav iysh et aviyw waet imo wadavaq baishato wahayu lavasar echad:
24 Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh.
25 ויהיו שׁניהם ערומים האדם ואשׁתו ולא יתבשׁשׁו׃
25 wayihayu shaneyhem ‘arumiym haadam waishato walo yitaboshashu:
25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.
